Looking for people who've bought JDM engines or has experience buying them
I have some quotes for engines to replace in my car. Does anyone have any dealing with these folks? Good experience, bad experiences. I'm not real comfortable with shelling out up to 1900.00 on something sight unseen with no real guarantee that it will work. Here's the quotes and the companies:
JDM Tiger Japaneses $1150.00
Osaka JDM $1250.00
Japan Power $1850.00
JDM Addiction $1045.00
Tokyo Motor Imports $1100.00
Honestly, I'd prefer to buy a USDM long block, but no one seems to sell those.
Thoughts please?

about 5-6 years ago a couple of us went to canada and bought 3 motors with trannys attached all the motors were good one motor had a steel flywheel with a double clutch each motor was $500 each no lie ...the guy did not know so we threw them in the back of our truck and headed back to the us ...we tried to get more motors but then he doubled the price ...one of the t2 motors had an automatic transmission on it.....please if you buy one open it up and refresh the insides the most youll have to do is apex springs oil seals water seals corner springs if your on a budget

I got a solid S5 JDM from Atkins Rotary, though I don't think he imports them on a regular basis.
I've bought parts from Rotaryshack, great guy to do business with.
You might check with corksport.com, when I was buying my JDM I tried to get one from them. I waited for their next shipment, but they didn't get any good S5 engines. All their S5 engines were cores for parts. Kudos to them for testing.
I almost bought an engine from JDM Tiger, talked to the guy several times on the phone and there was just something I didn't trust about the deal. Maybe I was paranoid and it was nothing.

I bought my engine from tiger. My experience was so-so. There is no doubt in my mind that I would have received a blown motor if I had it shipped. Fortunately, I struck a deal to pick out a engine from their stock. After I went through 6 blown engines, the owner started getting testy with me. He told me I could only test one more engine, thankfully the last engine had an acceptable amount of compression.
After environmental fees I was out the door with my wallet $1,500 lighter. One of the employees was nice enough to tell me how to get through customs without getting nailed by which helped out allot. I ended up paying more to drive to Toronto and get the engine personally but it worked out in the end because I have an engine I know will run.

Atkins Rotary took very good care of me and their engine has been nothing short of awesome. I was too broke to have it rebuilt before putting it in and it's been better than I could have hoped for.
Corksport was also very up front in saying all their S5 engines they got in were parts only.

Tiger japanese is a joke. i bought a s5 and they sent me a s4. Told me to pay to ship it back so they could see that it was the wrong series. Then told me to "Oh you cant just use it???" WTF. It was also blown and looked like hell. I ended up getting $1150 back from paypal but not my $350shipping. I kept the motor too. Shady is right. That guy is a moron. DO NOT BUY FROM THEM. My .02

Since im a noob take it for what its worth, but ive herd a few horror stories about Osaka and Honda Motors, might be different with rotarys but i doubt it. Ive seen one of their motors and while it wasnt completely trashed the head was worthless, the valve cover arrived broke, the cams and lifters were rusted and ruined. They wouldnt take it back either.
Ive had one engine imported and i used Japan Star, they did good by me, i havent herd much about them tho so they might be gone by now, and i know several people who have used Nippon. So again take it for what its worth.

i bought my s5 from www.jspecautosports.com the motor and everything were all very clean when it arrived, had great compression and is still running. BUT the do not give warrentys on rotarys like they do piston engines, most places it will be a hit or miss

I "lost" my emissions....
ahh, all caps! I'm being attacked! lol
seriously though my eyes hurt now...
Im a firm believer in you get what you pay for when it comes to motors, a company that sells for 1k isnt going to have a ton of great engines to pick from, pay another 2-300 and get one with a warrantee, it'll be worth it.

Out of several jspecs I have seen, there were only a couple that I would want to run as they were. Most of them have sticky seals, lots of carbon, or rust inside.

+1 for Jarco in GA... very solid staff and business.
My friend was doing an SR20DET swap into his 240sx. He got a red-top and installed it and it was running like ****... don't really know the story in technical aspects but they talked on the phone and an employee opted to drive and deliver 2.5 hours and bring up another motor w/ WAY less miles and a guaranteed good running motor. I think they pulled it out like the day before of a running RHD car.
He needed it that weekend to get his car back on the road so they said bring the old one back down and they would trade out. We packed up and drove 2.5 hours down to their business. When we arrived it was a very nice industrial section of town w/ big fences and a very nice building w/ a simple little logo on it. We round the corner and pull up to the bay doors. It was wall to wall engines 3 stories high and parts. Seats, cages, coilovers, wheels, etc. very well organized and labeled correctly. Exhausts were all hanging up and cleaned and organized, etc.
I would recomend them for parts, motors, etc. for anyone wanting to buy a motor for a swap. Their employees are super nice and they all tuck in their shirts (pretty stand up business thing I guess). Very pleasant experience from a passenger side view w/ my friends. They have had their share of 13B motors and I looked at 2 of them while we were there. They had everything on them besides the coolant hoses and small things.
Very nice business. If something happens and you aren't happy w/ anything... they make it right.
