Exhaust! should be the very first thing if you are looking for more power.

X2 for exhaust. Improve flow and save a lot of weight.

Most na mods are going to yield minimal horsepower gains. Basics like header, exhaust, intake etc aren't probably gonna be enough for you. Research aaroncakes website on 6 port turbos when the money is there ( hell of a start being able to subtract the price of an na header exhaust and intake system) I would focus more on saving up money for a turbo swap, or turbo 6 port piece together. There is also the option (non horsepower related ) of getting a decent suspension.

just save up a few grand and buy a turbo one... unless your GTU is in GREAT shape...

just keep your car till it blows up and toy and experement with it.. get to learn the rotary cars... then later turbo your car or move up to a turbo II

Build up the suspension now, and start saving for an LS1 swap.

I turbo'd my 6 port GXL while I was in college. All in all it cost me roughly $2700 (Canadian), it's MUCH faster than it was na, haven't dyno'd it so I don't really know how much hp its putting down.

Again, Aaron cake is the expert on the turbo 6 port.

i dont really have the time and or money for a turbo, and ive put so much blood and sweat into my NA that selling it just wouldnt be right. i bought in not running for $600 spend $45 getting it running, swapped from anuto to 5speed and just finished putting in a rebuilt engin, tranny and limited. soooo not gonna swap it out, but exhaust seems to be the general thought.

Besides bolt-ons, have you considered portwork and/or some kind of engine management?

There are lots of ideas to be found in the naturally aspirated section of the forum.

I thought about bridgeporting mine and going with a lightened flywheel, all the bolt ons i could handle/build, and an rtek/zeitronix wideband for fuel/spark/tune. I could probably squeeze 200 or so hp out of that but i dont think that's going to be enough for me. I'm going TII streetport now instead unless ofcourse premium fuel shoots up to $5 a gallon again.
