Looking at an FC, need a confirmation
Im looking at buying a 1990 RX7 n/a. Only thing is that it has an idle problem. The seller explained it like this:
"well the car starts up and runs fine, it will hold an idle at about 2000 but it sounds like it is missing. Then when you drive it, you can press in the clutch, and it will go back down to a un-even idle at 2000, but once you hit the brakes or turn the wheel (power steering) it will slowly die"
Now from what ive read this sounds like the Bypass Air Control valve. But for only 1500 i think the car is a steal if thats the main problem. Just trying to get some of you other guys opinion to make sure. Thanks

the mileage is 100,xxx. The ad says it has sparkling blue paint but it needs a passenger door handle and a stereo. Im still waiting on pics.
Either way, neither should be that difficult to correct, right?

the ACV replacement is very straight forward, but finding a vac leak can be a real PITA if you don't have the patience.
sounds like the BAC might also be faulty in addition the the vac/ACV problem.

looks like the upper radiator hose is kinked...and the interior is rough
I would try and get it cheaper then $1500.
I just got my 87 TII for $2500 in running condition, 77k, and a good interior. Just trying to give you a comparison.

- the fan shroud is missing. if driven like that it could have overheated.
- intake snorkel is missing (not a big deal)
- it's been in a fender bender at very least (S4 trim on the DR fender)
- DR demister grill is missing
- front DR speaker cover is missing
- has S4 turbo side mirrors, not the S5 ones.
and with the engine issues you should be able to get the price down a bit farther.

What do you guys think i should offer him? I wish I could carfax this, the fact that the trim doesnt match scares me. Problem is, is that it is extremely difficult to find a good FC around my area (Fayetteville, NC).
Might be back to craigslist to search again....

I wouldn't give up on it if your really interested. but plan on putting some serious TLC into it if you do get it. As for the fender trim, if the car isn't pulling left or right and there are no weird vibrations, chances are the chassis is straight. It was probably a small fender bender...no biggie.
if it were me looking at this car, I don't think I'd offer him more than 1K-1200 just based on the pictures. bring cash and wave it in his face...it does wonders

Right now he's talking 1200 for the car, after i brought up some of the issues. I think ill try to get it a little cheaper, but 1200 does seem better to me.
Definetly gonna compression test it, hasnt been rebuilt as far as i know, so thats a important issue.

After another talk with the seller ive got some more changes. Chassis has 133,772 miles, but the motor is from another RX7 and has 98,xxx miles. S4 tailights on the car. Still at 1200. Im really considering picking this one up if i can get a clean carfax somehow.

but while looking, I do see he has the OMP removed, you should make sure he's been premixing correctly.

I dont like this car one bit. The radiator hose is kinked and now fan shroud. I bet this car has overheated.....which if it did this car is no bueno.
and that looks like an S5 engine to me.

Im kind of doubting getting this with all you guys input. Ill still go and give it some tests. I sent him another email about the OMP/Premix deal. If he didnt premix, im not going to get it. But if he did and it passes all the test, i think ill pick it up.
Wow, its hard to find a good, clean FC..
I also found a TII for 1500, but it looked kind of dirty, and the front clip was a little beat up. Also needed a fuel sensor. Heres a pic:
