Looking To Buy FC - Questions
Hey guys im a newbie here.. so i'll prob be asking questions u heard before but i searched and didnt find anything so plz help out.
Ok im going to buy a 1987 Mazda RX-7 Turbo II Red with 200,000km on it..
i have some questions for when they do the check on the car... im gonna get a mechanic to do a full check of everything on the car... underbody, compression, everything. My questions for you are:
1) what should the compression be when they do the test?
2) what major things have gone wrong or usually go wrong with FC that i should check or look out for
3) how much rust is TOO much rust?
4) what parts normally wear and i shouldnt' be concerned with (exhaust rusting out etc)
5) what else other than rust should i be concerned with? (gonna check for frame damaage too)
6) is there any way to check if the turbo works well? does the 1987 have a built in boost gauge maybe i could use that?
and some general used car buying questions...
1) do they usualy let u drive it before you buy it?
2) do people mind if i take it to a mechanic to get this full inspection done?
3) anyone south of london in canada wanna come meet me and help me out and tell me if the car is any good or not? i really want ti but i odnt have much money so i had to go for this car... i talked to her on the phone she seems nice.. its cheap because her son left and they are trying to get rid of it, and she said its not bad rust just a bit of minor surface rust....
all and any help will be appreciated thanks in advance
plz email at lexusrules@hotmail.com if ur interested in coming to this place about 30 min south of london on monday. Thanks again

If you're buiyng your first car (sounds like it), you may want to consider something other than a 15 year old turbocharged RX7. There's a lot of potential for difficulties - some major, some minor - in a car like that, and I'm sure you don't want a car that may give you serious headaches. You'd rather be do more driving than fixing, especially so if you are not very experienced in car repair in general. My 2 cents on this is - If you must have an RX7, buy a non-turbo (called an "NA" - Naturally Aspirated) as they are usually more reliable and longer-lasting. I have an '88 NA, and it's been trouble-free for the 2 years I've owned it. Not that they are all trouble-free, but they tend to have fewer serious problems than the turbo cars. As you look through this website, you'll see a pattern of more engine problems with the turbo cars. Give it some thought before you jump in, and good luck!

thanks although this is my first used car purchase i have been under the hoods of cars for a while.. and the idea of this car is infact to work on it more than i drive it.
The story is long but i have a GS300 that i have modded a lot already but i am getting an FC as a second car.
just trying to get a good car the more knowledge the better. I dont know much about rotary thats hteo nly thing. Although my friend knows everything about them and he could help me out if i need it.
Also i would never get N/A if turbo was an option! i love boost! sorry....

Yikes man, as much as the 87 TII is such a sweet car, being as old as it with 200000 kms on it, you might be heading for problems in the long run. I'd go with a non turbo first, get used to the rotary and then maybe a TII with a rebuilt engine or something

Wassup man....get the Turbo II it's an awesome car. Although second gens (FC) are cows in my opinion (heavy floating boats), go for it The turbo IIs are ok in my book. Yeap you will have to spend lot's of money to get it where you want but they are reliable cars once you learn how to take care of it. The N/A vs. turbo dilema is up too you. I have a love for N/A, but turbo is the way to go for power. It all depends on what you want.
From your experience with cars I know you ain't going to have problems with it, but it will ask for maintenance and love as any other used car. Be ready to spend some $ on it but $ is relative to some folks. These cars are cheap nowdays and parts are easy to get. Modding it is a lot cheaper than modding your floating, boat like suspension GS300 is, although I'm glad you got the teins. Hhahahaha
I have spent more money on my FB than any other FC I have owned and that's because my love is on the FBs...owned 7 so far.
take care. And welcome to the club...

so anywyas... i think im gonna go with the TII and rebuild the motor with a street port if she makes it through the winter... i think the car was well maintained it looks like its in good condition. Im obviously not gonna buy it if its spitting oil and isn't making boost and is rusted out!
i hope this works out well because its a great car and i really like it.... if i get the car you guys will see me around here a lot more!!
