Looking at an 88 rx7 turbo II
Hey guys, im new to mazda all together. But ive been looking for a car and i like the style of this one. Its a 1988 rx7 turbo II with 149k but had a new engine installed at 127k due to the owner before him had compression problems. Its a 5 speed, red, only mods include an hks turbo tuned exhaust and k&n drop in filters. The car is very clean only has one small dent on front side bumper, minor minor rust on the sun roof and the intermediate and fast doesnt work on the wiper switch. I read some reviews about the cars and people said fuel economy is bad. He said he gets 22-25 out of it. which i think is pretty good compared to the 12 mpg i got with my bmw 740. But besides that, hes asking 4grand but would probally take 3500 for it. Any opinions, comments, or questions would be greatly appreciated. What do you guys think?

The wiper switch can be fixed faily easy. If he has documentation on the engine being redone then it is worth what he is asking. Maybe you might be able to find a rotary tech in your area to look it over. IF you like the car then get it. Although if your 740 was 98 or newer you may not adjust to this car well.

He has all documentation of the engine being done. He is going to get in inspected soon but said it shouldnt have any problems. I know its a different then driving a 740 but i sold it a while ago. I can drive stick so thats okay if thats what you meant. It was a 95 btw. What kind of mpg do these usually get?

On a turbo II, unless you are very careful to stay out of boost (which is hard on the stock turbo) expect 14-16mpg unless you do a lot of highway.
The car was rated at 16mpg city back in the 80's, and now with the new EPA rating system it is 15mpg (you can see it on their website).

I saw that on the website. Ill have to talk to him about it. Ive seen alot of different averages though. Some people act like they get 16ish and others say they manage low 20's. Here is the link for it

No worse than buying a modern sports car or suv 16/25 is pretty standard.
If the seller has the documentation, I say go for it. My first TII was 3k but I didn't do my research and it ended up needing a rebuild. Second one was only 2500, and is still running strong.
Compression test, compression test, compression test!
