Lincoln Mark VIII fans and a Volvo fan too

I haven't been to a salvage yard in maybe a year. I have been unimpressed with the Merc Villager fan in my 90Vert. Maybe it works better for stock radiators than on my Griffin. Maybe mine is defective. It seems to blow much less after the motor is hot, maybe this is the junk yard fan syndrome

So I got two Lincoln Mark VIII fans and a Volvo fan. If either of the lincoln fans are two speed, I will put one on my car and be done. If they are both the later version single speed, they go into the shed for a PWM controller and a later project.

Then the Volvo fan will come into play. I'm gonna use the AGreen method and make a fiberglass shroud custom fit to my Griffin and the Volvo fan.

Stay tuned.

I used the Volvo fan on the V-8 swapped FD and it was perfectly sufficient.
If you're going to make a custom shroud (especially easy with the Volvo unit because the fan unbolts from the stock shroud), you might try incorporating the bypass flaps from the Volvo part...I thought they helped.

I unscrewed the volvo fan from the stock shroud. The one I got was damaged, so I left the shroud in the yard.

Prices went up since I last bought my Villager fan for $20. Charged me $25 each. Maybe they thought since I bought 3 fans I was commercial! Pretty much a Spanish culture at the picknpull here. Sometimes they soak the gringo. I still got a good deal and everyone wins.

Interesting note: There was not single Taurus of the generation with the 3.8l engine and the two speed fan. They were all later models with 2 fan setups.

Without ac , fmic, and a oil cooler a v8 swap fc gets plenty of cooling from even the most mediocore of electric fans. Mine never ran hot and it had a cheapo electric fan and a $150 summit universal alum radiator with no shrouding at all

Jack- i have my taurus fan running single speed, is the thinking of the dual speed to keep the fan from turning on and off too often?

Yes partly so.

My original use of the Taurus fan was to turn the low speed on with temp. Low was adequate for cooling on my N/A. High speed came on with the A/C compressor. That worked out nicely, yielding terrific A/C performance. I upgraded to a Mark VIII fan with 2-speed. The fan worked even better than the Taurus fan. It was an 18" diameter monster with blades configured for high static pressure performance. This let it pull air through my 3" radiator core effectively. It also fit my Griffin (19"x19"x3" core) with lots of open area for highway airflow. The Mark VIII motor had a reputation for short life. My fan lost the bearings after about a year. I could never find a replacement that was 2 speed.

So I used the Merc Villager fan. It is a 2-speed fan but only pulls about 15 amps on high. It has proven to me to pull about the same air on high that a Taurus or Mark VIII pulls on low. Bout the same amps too. Low speed is worthless. Been running with the thing on high for several months. With warm weather coming I decided to up the ante and go big.

When I get around to the project, I will post up the amp draw for the Volvo Fan, high and low.

those 3" radiators are killers, very few electric fans seem to provide adequate airflow

Update

One of the Lincoln Fans was 2-speed. The other is single. It goes back in parts department inventory. I have a single speed reserve motor too.

The Volvo fan is waiting for another project-fiberglass shroud ala-AGreen-but with a twist.

While I was at it I replaced the cheap electric temp gauge with an accurate mechanical gauge. Now I have better resolution of temp changes.

I retapped the waterpump face and installed my 3/8" fan switch. It was previously tapped with 1/8" thread for the temp sender.

Still not happy with the temps I'm running. Yesterday was 100*. With the A/C running in town I was at 210*. A/C was running very cold.
