limits of adjustable shocks.
limits of adjustable shocks.
I'm looking for a suspension. True coilovers are a little out of my price range. So, I'm thinking of getting adjustable shocks like KYB AGX or Tokico Illuminas + sleeves. 1st, what other shocks are adjustable other than those two. Are the Illuminas external adjustable? Secondly, are limits to these adjustable shocks? Can I go as high of a spring rate as I want, and as low as I want? Will these shocks work as well as lower spring rate springs/sleeves compared to high spring rate ones. Thanks

Those shocks you've listed are all dampening adjustable.
Limits are that they arent ride height adjustable and dont include pillowball mounts nor camber plates.
As for springs, your spring rate selection will be a lot lower than coilover springs. I think the stiffest springs available would be Swift or RSR springs. And no you can't use coilover springs on shocks if you're thinking about that.

There's also the Koni Yellow, which is the best of all the adjustable shocks available for our cars. The upper limit is a bit of a fuzzy line, but I'll post what I've heard in the past. You can go higher, but the shocks start to loose the ability to handle the spings and the ride will get rougher and bouncier.
Koni: 450-500 lb/in front, 350 lb/in rear
KYB: 400-450 lb/in front, 300-350 lb/in rear
Tokico: don't know, they're overpriced for what you get
If you want to go cheap, get the KYB's they're a good deal, if you want to go more upmarket, get the Konis, they're a better shock than the Tokico's.
Yes the Tokicos are externally adjustable (5 clicks). The KYB's have a nice feature in that they're adjustable from the bottom on the back, meaning you can leave speakers in the rear towers and still adjust the shocks.
The lowest rate isn't really a concern, they'll work with stock and that's as soft as you can do AFAIK.

I second Koni's are the best. I also second AGXs vs. Tokicos because they also are overpriced. But Koni's are actually pretty expensive, especially paired with brand new Ground Controls, that's close to entry level coilover price (Stance, etc.).

I was talking about the GC that they sell on EBay. Those are not custom rates. So when someone who buys from GC doesnt ask for a specific spring rate, what rate does GC do.
Is there a maximum amount of drop that the shocks can handle?

I don't think GC sells on eBay, those will be knockoffs. I have no idea what those rates are. The GC rate they'll reccomend most is probably the 400/275.
I have no idea how low you can go, but when you go really low you'll loose shock travel and can shorten the life of the shocks.
