lightweight flywheels... worth it?
lightweight flywheels... worth it?
Well my clutch is slipping so it's time to upgrade.
I have an S5 n/a and I think I'm going to get an ACT HD... shops have said OEM will work but I like the feel of a heavier clutch.
Since the flywheel is going to have to get remachined anyway, is it worth the extra money to get a lightweight one? Obvioulsy my car isnt making much torque... but who knows, every little bit helps on these N/As.

http://www.corksport.com has ACT flywheels and a few other brands.
Then there is also http://www.racingbeat.com for theirs.
Heads up though, alot of them don't come with a counterweight. You can find one off automatic car of the same series.

i have a 88 t2, and nobody metioned that if your flywheel is too light. you are gonna have a **** of a time engaging gears. specially from a stop. i just bought a act extreme pp/street disc kit. why dunno, just wanted the best they had(now there is one better). you said you like the heavier feel, well your in for a treat because act hd can make one leg look bigger than the other in a couple months! the lighter your flywheel with this clutch, the more it will just be like an on/off switch rather than a gradual progression. also ive hear of mating issues between act and rb. i was looking at the 12.5lb streetlite flywheel also. in the end im tired of saving for this ****. stayin stock flywheel.
good luck

Aside from the exhaust, a light flywheel is the most noticeable bolt on for an NA IMHO...
Before I sold my car (and before the TII swap) the racing beat aluminum flywheel made a world of difference up top!

i remember reading somewhere that a lighter flywheel doesn' t help on a turbo...something like the rpms rise faster but it spools up slower, or something...basically that it balances out to little advantage. On an n/a though...
nah its like a lighter flywheel has a lower moment of inertia...it looses speed faster since the bigger heavier ones have more mass they kinda keep thier momentum SO:
lighter the flywheel the faster the revs...cuz its easyer for it to spin...
heavier the flywheel slower the revs cuz obivouly its heavier...
the lighter ones drop rev faster...so it might be a little harder on the streets..basically..but if u dont mind foot work....u got an advantage...
