I have a 1991 N/A with the auto seatbelts and my driver's side seatbelt stopped working. I'm aware of the lifetime recall, I had it done on my passenger side seatbelt mechanism. However, the problem is that, apparently, the driver's side has already been replaced under the recall before I owned the car. And, Mazda headquarters tells me that they're legally obligated to perform the recall only once. After that, it becomes the responsibility of the owner.

Great. Well I'm not about to PAY for them to do the work. But I'm worried about how safe the seatbelt will be in the event of an accident, as the recall made it sound like it would not be safe (hence the "lifetime" recall in the first place). Does anybody have any insight on this? I'm not worried about having to buckle and unbuckle the seatbelt to get in and out of the car. I might tear it apart and see if I can better fasten or maybe weld the seatbelt buckle to the frame of the car.

 

It's about as safe as a koala bear getting punched in the face.

I'd go to a different dealership or find out who exactly did the first repair. Had it been done properly, it would have had to be done once.

Not that I'd bother either way. As soon as my screw up...old school belts.

 

no no no. its for the life of the vehicle. they just dont want to do it for free and not get paid.

OK thanks guys. I've printed out the recall letter. Maybe I can convince them to do it with that sheet of paper in my hand...

I had to have my driver side done a few years ago after an aggressive weekend of driving where the cable came off track. Took it to the dealership I always go to and they checked and said it had been done before. Showed them the letter/notice/whatever and they fixed it again and decided to do the passenger side just for good measure.

It is for the life of the car and they have to do it. Plain and simple.

 

And you believed them?
