Left turn signal problem?

I can't believe nobody has heard of this:

My left turn signal intermittently worked. Sometimes it would run, others, it wouldn't. When it wouldn't, it sounded like BOTH bulbs were missing, but they're fine. When I first got my Rex, I thought this was a common problem(a la windshield wiper fix), because 2 of the the TIIs I looked at both had intermittently functioning left turn signals. So when I finally got my car, and discover I have the same problem, imagine my surprise when I find out nobody else does. Am I wrong? Do other people experience this? Someone fill me in. I've got lots more little electrical gremlins, but I can't post them right now, this is just the one that bugs me the most! Thanks guys!

Steve

P.S. OF COURSE I searched!

The hazards work, but only the right side It's as if the bulbs weren't even there, or the contacts were dirty. I cleaned the contacts, even though I didn't think they were suspect(both the front and back at the SAME time? =P) But still nothing.

Okay, the hazard working rules out the switch then. The hazards are a different input to the CPU.

coming out of the CPU is a Green/Black wire. This is the output to the left signal bulbs. If there is no output on this wire when either the hazards or turn signal is on, then the CPU is bad or needs re-soldering

If there is output (12 Volts + flashing) but the left lights are still not working then the problem is in the wiring harness of the car, and you will need to look for a broken or cut wire or loose connector in the drivers kick panel.

I've got a turn signal switch, for the dash if you want it. $20 shipped.

Come on guys, the solution is obvious - he should only make right turns - add some interest to his dull and boring life!

Resolder the CPU. I've seen the same problem on another car.

The hazards having the same problem rules out the switch... He doesn't need a new switch he needs to fix his CPU

Resoldering the cpu seems to have worked. I can't make it fail now. Where I could before. Thanks for the help.

When you guys say "resoldering" what exactly are we talking about? The little green/black wire? Is there anything in the FSM that might help me out? Or a real quick+dirty How To? Thanks a ton!

dude, i just had the same exact problem. my left turn signal worked on and off, then just decided to quit. grr. well i whiped out the trusty voltmeter and the shop book and ran the diagnostics provided. turned out that the chip inside the cpu under the driver's side kick-panal was busted, i dont know if you can get em "rebuilt" for lack of a better term but i bought a new one ~$70 for the dealership here in town. put that new bad boy in and the signals work fine. but i sympathize with you , only 1 turn signal sucks hardcore.

my $.02

I have the same problem. Most of the time my left turn signal works but it will take spells where it won't work for a day or two.Right one works fine.I've been meaning to swap out the CPU with the one in my parts car but haven't got around to it.

Well, I FINALLY got around to doing it! Pulled the CPU, pried it apart(that took forever), and resoldered the solenoid for the left turn signal output. Works like a CHARM! Now I can make left turns legally again! Thanks to IceMark, Aaron, everyone who posted similar stores(I swear I thought I was the only one), and Ted who I hit up for some pointers the night before! You guys are great! I'll post some pics of the corroded solder point and the redone job if they turned out good. Arigatou folks!

Good to hear you fixed it

I ahve decided that I am gonna start offering rebuilt CPU's in the next month or so for those people that don't want, or can't do it themselves.

Just gotta build up a decent stock pile first.

Still no pics, but...
I noticed something odd, when I took my CPU apart. I only have two circuit boards, the main one, and the one with the turn signal outputs... Did the series 5 FCs drop the third chip, or am I missing some vital innard of my car? What circuit board was supposed to be there? Any clues?

Off the top of my head I would think the Horn relay was removed, but I will have to look it up to make sure
