Leather Seat Replacement

My 91 RX7, convertable needs the leather seats replaced. Should I have them re-covered or try to find good used ones? I have searched some used parts dealers with no results. These seats have the speakers in the headrest.

Just thought someone may have found the answer.

Hey my seats need to be replaced ecspecially the drivers seat. Leatherseats.com has the convertible leather seat covers (without foam and frame of seat) Not listed in Applications because they are a farely new product and haven't updated their site. Price is around $579, not sure if thats per pair or per seat. Sometimes if you cantact them you can get a group buy going.

Here is one of the group buy threads i found while trying to find the same thing your doing.

https://www.rx7club.com/showthread.p...+Leather+seats

P.S. Also has someone you can contact from leatherseats.com as well as all the information, and maybe even a pic of what the seat covers look like if you go through all the pages.

Hope this helps you as much as it did me.

I did mine last winter with leatherseats.com replacements from the second group buy. Came out great, check the ebay auctions under rx-7 convertible search they auction off a pair often, they use my pictures in the ad.

I can send you pictures of the work involved, took me about 12 hours, about half of that is getting the old leather off, you need to cut about 50 hog ring staples they stretch and restaple the new leather. There is new foam in the ribbed section but you need to reuse the rest.

I just bought a pair of leatherseats.com vert covers on ebay today.

Friday I went to a local upholstery place that specializes in boats. He used to work cheap in the winter, his offseason. So many of my buddies who play with Porsche 928's have him work on thier leather and now it seems he doesn't have an offseason. He wanted $800 to redo my vert seats in leather and $450 to do them in very high quality vinyl, complete with perforated seat inserts. Too rich for my blood.

So I made sure I won the auction.

I will let you guys know how they look and fit.

Maybe I will write up a how-to.

Have any of you replaced the "butt" foam peice. I've noticed they tend to go bad after all these years, and was just wondering how hard they are to take off of the springs on the seat..

Most of the time The drivers seat is beat but the passenger side is still nice. This is the case with my old seats. You can buy two pairs of used seats for less than one set of covers costs, and just use the two passenger side covers. Just another option for you to think about.

The left and right covers are slightly different in the seat hinge area since the hardware is opposite. You could swap them and just trim the leather on the "wrong side". I can't see many 14 plus year old leather being in that good condition. For what you'll spend on used seats I don't think it's worth the trouble. If you get used vert seats make sure you check the condition of the frames and tracks, I found some that were very rusty. I had a little rust on my rails so I used the POR-15 stuff on them before reinstalling.

I would suggest you guys get a group by going again, probably only need about 5 to get some kind of discount. It was the best $500 I spend on any car appearance wise.

[QUOTE=jackhild59]I just bought a pair of leatherseats.com vert covers on ebay today.

Jack, let me know if you need any help. Mine actually look better now that they settled a little, those pics were taked in January in a unheated NY garage.

Take your time and be patient, I drew diagrams and took pictures of where how the old covers attached. There is a lot of pulling (gently!) and sqeezing to get the leather in the proper place on the foam. The headrests were also a pain, turn them inside out and try to get them on like a pillowcase. I had to drill out the screw that held on the headrests and replace with a new screw.

Locals here in Socal can get vinyll for $375 per pair at Garza's REAL leather for $650 at Garza's

they are in La puente ca. If you could get them shipped cheaply they'd do it.........shipping is the issue.

Yes, the hardware is different, the outsides have holes where the plastic covers the mechanism. But the hole on the passenger cover won't show because it will be up against the tunnel when it is on the drivers seat. And I misspoke. If your passenger seat is good, you only have to buy ONE used seat to steal the cover from. I am selling mine for $150 bucks for the pair, and I had them sold until I figured the shipping on an 80 lb oversize package was close to $300! So if you find a pair close by you can get one good used cover, and have two matching factory covers in great condition for $150. That may be easier to swallow than $5-600 for two new. And my passenger cover is basically in perfect condition, it doesn't even have any creases on it. Not everybodys are beat up.

Its a decent, cheaper option.
