Lack of Power it seems...
O.k. everyone I need some help. i have an 86 GXL, it seems to be running fine, ive had it a month. no problems or anything. the only i found wierd is that It really doesnt seem to have the ***** it should have. I know a guy with one, all he has is a header, and diffent mufflers, his car seems To be **** faster than mine!?? i may have poor compression or something im not sure! i know my car has really stupid looking exhaust. Who ever owned the car before me, put on a new exhaust, its not performance oriented at all, in fact it actually looks shittier than stock exhaust. But i dont know how much of a difference it would make!! please help me guys!

one of the verts dynoed 90rwhp, but she hasn't had a tuneup in forever.
Most of your lacking HP is just from needing the FULL 60K mile service/tuneup. The rest could be clogged exhaust (replace pre-cat with downpipe, performance main cat, catback exhaust).
what's your fuel economy? Usually that's directly tied into exhaust or tuneup (or lack of one).

Once, one of the spark plug wires on my 88 SE fell out of its ignitor (the coil) just enough to not make contact, but it didn't fall out far enough to grab my attention. The car ran fine, but made very little power. Check to be sure all of your plug wires are fully in the ignitors and the spark plugs.

The plugs are rotary specific, so most likely OEM plugs would be best.
If you want to do the tuneup yourself, go download one of the shop manuals and read up. I think teamfc3s.org has one online.
If you really want to do it all yourself, there's no substitute for the paper shop manual.

I've bought the proper NGK brand of plug for my car at AutoZone before. Make sure you get two for the trailing and two for the leading. Just try local parts house's and maybe you'll find them. I've usually got good service out of the factory plug wires but others complain they don't last long enough. Change your fuel filter and air filter also. The air filter is optional if you've done it recently but the fuel filter can get clogged easily with one bad tank of gas. Generally every 30,000 is normal for the fuel filter but I change mine every 20,000 +/-.

Take my advice. I've done this on my 1986 Supra and it ran brand new. I swear you will notice a significant gain.
Here is the list:
- Flush engine with STP engine flush (Do a search, some FC owners had good results)
- Change oil and filter. Use compression restorer (this might be controlverisal, but for me, it does more gain and no harm)
- Change spark plugs (get the cheapest one)
- Change spark plug wires
- Clean fuel injecotrs with fuel system treatment (any brand) Use it twice with higher octane gas. After that, fill up with your normal grade gas.
- Clean throttle body with SEAFOAM (many people have good results on FC, I had good results with my cars)
- TPS adjustments.
- Fuel Filter
All these tune ups might cost you around 100 bucks for a DIY'er, but it is totally worth it. The car ran a lot smoother, quiter, and with much better milage! It is also a part of prolonging your engine.
