koyo rad cooling question.

I got the koyo and after installing the car hasn't gotten above 1/4 of the way up the gauge however I love when my car runs cool and was thinking that maybe if I took out the a/c condenser it would cool even better because the air would hit the rad instead of the condenser first, what do you guys think??? or is this just common knowledge? THanks.

Your car should never reach more than 1/4 up the gauge. The thermostat regulates the water temperature at the engine. Yes, removing the AC and anything in front of the rad will improve its cooling ability, but that will not translate into lower operating temperatures, unless you had a probem in the 1st place.

I bought a KOYO this year and put it on a na converted to a turbo. The temps ALWAYS stay below 180 degrees, in fact most of the time the temps are a lot closer to 170. I have real doubts about the MAZDA thermostat or whether the thermostat from MAZDATRIX is a MAZDA thermostat since the temps stay below/well below 180 on most days. I'm using an aftermarket water temp gauge. The factory gauge reads less than 1/4 all the time NOW, since the KOYO. Leave the a/c condenser in place. You need a/c in La.

KOYO'S are good, real, real good. I might get another for the other car.

THanks hailers my a/c already doesn't work just to lazy to take everything out and really don't have the knowledge on how to take everything out. This is stricly my weekend car so I can go without at least for that long, but yeah your right if my daily beater didn't have an a/c I would die in this heat.

kd mine was doing the same thing so I just did a total cooling system replacement (not that expensive) since the cooling system is getting old about this time and damn my temps are way better. I would change not only rad but t-stat, rad hoses, water pump, and I would probably go ahead and change that heater hose that always goes out. The only real cost in all of that is the rad and about 40 or 50 for the water pump. Good luck!

My car with a VERY bad slipping waterpump does 1/4 on surface streets and 1/3 to a little under 1/2 on highway accel.

The koyo is very nice.

I remember idling the car for 2 hours in 110 heat here in AZ and it didn't even go over 1/4.

I am using stock fan and shroud right now.

I have a Permacool and Black magic temp switch in my garage waiting for me to fab a shroud.

I never plan to run a fan without a shroud. Already had bad experience

I think it's the best fan for what it is.
Larger size but still fits the stock location without modding.

Oh yeah KD86rx7.
Sounds like you have a cooling problem.
Check your water pump to see if it is slipping and check your thermostat.

These two things are common to be bad and will cause extra heat.

Oh yeah forgot to mention it hit 114 a day ago and I drove around without any problems.

i replaced the water pump, and the thermo stat, about to replace it with the koyo rad. and at the same time the hoses.

i dont think my water pump is slipping becuas ei have a dual alt pulley and it was slipping before, made hella squeaks, but i tightened it and no more squeaks, but still high temps.

it started when i was doing some hard driving up on the mountains, i had bad belts then, so i guess my belts slipped after constant high revs, coolant was spilling everywhere. i put more coolant/water in, dont know where it all went, i saw it on the ground after starting the car again, but dont konw where the leak was, but right now there's no leak, i replaced the water pumpthen and the belts. the cooling was never the same

I had ordered a Koyo several weeks ago when David at Coolradiator.com ran out of cores for his FC radiator. After waiting several weeks for the backordered Koyo to arrive, David wrote me to tell me he found cores and could get one to me in a couple of days--it should be here today. I'll take some pix and get some temp reslults up soon.

Radiator installed:

This is the "Racing Radiator" from www.coolradiator.com. It lists for $259, but as he was out when I ordered originally he offered it to me for $239 (included shipping UPS.) The unit is very lightweight and well constructed. No temperature tests yet.
