keyless entry

Hey, I'm gonna try and install a keyless entry/alarm system tomorrow in my car. I have an 89 GXL.
I got the alarm, a door actuator and relays. Is that everything I need?
So how hard is it to actually install it? Do I have to open both doors or only the driver side?

Thanks!!

If you have the factory DL motor already in the passengers side (follow me locks, the passengers door locks when you push the drivers latch down) then you can get away with just putting a motor in the drivers door.

But if you don't have the "follow me" locks you'll need to put a motor into each door.

The install is pretty simple. The worst part is routing the wires back through the door harness tube.

Oh thanks but I already got that.
2 more questions and I'll stop bothering you:
-can I open the hatch with the remote?
-and which diagram should I use? They have "5 wires alternating door lock", "vacuum operated central locking", "2 step door unlock wire connection for ground switched door locks" and "2 step door unlock wire connection for positive switched door locks".

Thanks!

The 5 wire set up would be the closest to what you are doing. Its actually a type D system, but 5 wire is close.

If the keyless control brain doesn't have built in relay's you'll use two relays (one for lock and one for unlock). You would wire the relays as follows:

(on the bottom or side of the relay you will find the pins numbered)

87A on both relays to ground
87 and 86 on both relays to 12v+
85 to negitive trigger lock or unlock trigger of the keyless entry. (85 of one relay to lock of the keyless, 85 of the other relay to unlock of the keyless)
30 of the relay to the newly installed actuator (30 of one relay to one lead of the motor, 30 of the other relay to the other lead of the motor).

You can pop the hatch if you add a actuator to the hatch unlock rod and wire it in. To wire the relay for it:

87 and 86 of the relay to 12V+
85 of the relay to the keyless entry channel two negitive trigger output.
30 of the relay to one lead of the actuator
the other lead of the actuator is grounded.

Sorry for resurrecting an old thread but that's what searching will do to you...

So Icemark said...

So this means there is 12v+ on both 87 and 86 terminals, plus 87A is grounded.

I've also seen a 3-wire diagram (attached) which has 12v+ on one 85, one 86 and 12v+ on both 87s with the 87A not attached to anything.

And I've seen a 5-wire diagram (attached) which seems to be identical to the 3-wire, except the 87A is going to a switch, but i'm not using a switch.

And then there's the reverse polarity diagram (attached), which adds grounding on 87A. It seems to match what Icemark was saying, except he said 12v+ should go to both 86 terminals, where the diagram has it criscrossed on one relay.

So what is right? Or maybe it doesn't matter if the 12V+ comes in on the 86 or the 85 side of a relay and Icemark was just keeping it simple?

Can someone please clarify?
