kendall gear oil
I was calling around local shops that sell the more exotic synthetics. I found a local shop selling Kendall synthetic 140 weight gear oil for $8.50 a quart. Not a bad price.
Anyone ever use kendal in their trannies or diff's? Is 140 weight too much? Street driven car, possible track use in a half a year or longer. Im still fixing a few things my 87 t2 needs.

Thanks. I remembered a friend was using really thick fluid for his drift car, It was the redline heavyweight shockproof gear oil. It was either neon blue or neon red. I forgot
is that additive any good? Im trying to find hte redline oil with lsd additive for my diff. No luck finding something nearby
Anyone try royal purple? They have it at the nearby pep boys

I used royal purple in the gear box but not the diff. To be honest, the trans feels just like it did before the royal purple, I mean its gearoil.
since I have lsd I used redline with the lsd additive.
If you cant find any redline at local stores, just buy online. Your best bet is probably the local tuning shops.

Only the Kendall industrial gear oils are advertised as using Group IV base stock, so I must assume that their synthetic automotive oils are based on Group III, which is just glorified petroleum oil.
If you want synthetic oil, you should at least get something using Group IV (PAO) base stock, which is nearly as good as Group V.
I don't think $8.50/qt is such a great deal. You should be able to find Red Line (Group V) for $9-10/qt, or Royal Purple (Group IV) for about $6-7 per quart. Unless you race seriously on the track, the gear oil should last at least 30 months / 30,000 miles, so a few extra dollars should not make much difference in the long run.

I am not race serious, but something like transmission and diff fluid stays in for so long I wouldnt mind paying a lil more for something better. I redid a few things in my rear end and now my diff is empty

Any Advance Auto will be able to special order just about any kind of Redline oil you want. They will have to call it in through a second source, so every person working there might not know how to do that, but the manager should. Under $8/quart and they ship it for free.
