K&N Cold Air Intake Question

A friend of mine just installed a K&N cold air intake kit into his Dodge Dakota Sport about a three weeks ago. Last weekend, after he had about 500 miles on the oil and I checked it. Oil looked like it was about 3,500+ miles old - very dirty.

His truck is brand new - only about 3,000 on the odometer.

I was wondering if this is a side effect of the K&N letting more crap pass through for better airflow. Anybody here noticed that after doing this mod on their 7?

No, this has nothing to do with the filter. Did he put any funky additives in the oil? If your friend is really worried about it, he should take it into the dealer so that they can look at the oil. It's under warranty, right?

Yep. it's under warranty. He's wondering if they didn't change the filter... Sounds like he needs to start doing his oil changes himself.

Better that way.. then you know exactly what you're getting and doing it for 1/3 the cost.

o.k. he just looked at the paperwork. No oil filter change. Dumbsh*t's...

The reason I asked is I'm thinking about doing this mod on my n/a, but if it's gonna let a bunch of dirt and crap into the engine, I'll stick with the stock setup.

From what I've heard from other 7 owners, the seat-of-the-pants dyno after this mod is fairly noticeable. Who on here has done the mod and what do you think?

I have it and have no problems. My oil always looks nice and clean. I have never had my oil dirty. I put the filter on it about a week after I got the car.

Go for it.

The HP increase is really more of a percentage thing. You will probably get about 3-5 HP more on the dyno with a K&N filter. I think that the big advantage with the K&N is that it is good for 10 years, and you only have to clean it about every 50,000 miles. I'm lazy, and I'm cheap, so this makes a lot of sense to me.

Oh yeah, and I'm **** retentive, too. Every time I change the oil filter, I use a laundry marker to write the date and mileage on the top of the filter so I know when to change it - kinda like the Born-On date on your beer. When I was younger I didn't work on my car as much. One night (Christmas, no less) my car blew out a spark plug, and it cost me all of my Christmas money for an engine diagnosis to tell me that some idiot didn't tighten the plug all the way. From then on, I made sure that I was going to be the only idiot who worked on my car if I could help it.

Yeah, I feel your pain. I could go into a long story about how the mechanic the previous owner went to screwed up the clutch (didn't put the pilot bearing in correctly), and jacked the 2nd/3rd gear syncros in the tranny.

After taking it to a worthy shop and $2,500.00 later, I drove my car home, swearing the whole way that I'd learn everything I could about these cars so I never have to go down that road again.

You're engine will breath better. I had a cone style K&N in my 93 325i and i noticed a big difference. I also have the HKS super mega flow in my TII and also made a big difference. The only bad thing i have noticed is gas milage. Seems like my gas milage had gotten a bit worst.

Might wanna check your foot, it's probably a bit heavier.

My gas mileage actually went up about a few miles per tank.
