(First post did not seem to work)

Hi guys, this forum has been really helpful in the past and I hope you guys can help me again.

I just replaced the engine on my 89 automatic due to bad compression on my last engine. Idid the swap myself and put a used engine in that runs great. The problem is that when I put it in drive and don't accelerate right away, then the car shuts off. But, if I do accelerate, it drives fine. When I come to a stop I have to pop it in neutral or the car dies. Any idea how to fix this. I already raised the idle to 1100 but it still dies. I drove it like this today to the gas station and back. Basically the car shuts off in gear if I am not accelerating.

The next thing i need help with is, I need 1 oil cooler line. Anyone know where i can buy one. I need the one that is shorter and more towards the front of the car.

Go to a hydrolic shop (or similar) and get them to make you an oil line.

Will the car only die when you put it in drive or is it when you put it in 1st reverse you know all the other gears to. And mazdatrix sells the oil cooler line and you don't have to do any measureing or you cold find a local junk yard and pull one out of one of their cars.

I'm thinking BAC as well, but I don't have any experience with automatics.

Okay I should have been more clear. It dies in every gear except for park and neutral. I don't think it could be the ac because
1. I did not put the c/c belt on
2. I did not press the a/c button
or could that be causing the problem.
What is the BAC and how do i fix it or replace it.

Oh yeah another thing that i should add is that when I adjusted the idle to 1100 i did it by adjusting the ccable that goes to the accelerator. Is this okay or do I have to do it another way for the computer to understand the idle? If so how?

check your TPS, via the repair manual and make sure it is functioning. also check for thrown codes.

you dont want to adjust your idle by using the throttle cable the repair manual explains the right way to adjust idle....

The problem is the BAC valve. Grab a Haynes manual or do a search on "BAC valve" for info. The problem is not the TPS, but adjusting it couldn't hurt as long as the adjustment is done correctly.

I was reading the manual and it said to adjust the BAC if it is a turbocharged model but mine is N/A. Right now I am trying the ATF trick by putting 1/2 cup of atf in each lower spark plug hole every 16 hours and rotating it 1/3 turn.

Could be the torque converter not disengaging properly. I guess check electrical connections on the tranny. Check tranny fluid.

Is there any electrical conections going to the torque converter, and the only electrical going to my 5-speed is the back up light sensor, and one other plug that is probably a warning light. Since it's an automatic if you or the person before you have never changed the ATF in the transmission, and then you swapped the motor ,and changed the fluid, you might have killed the tranmission. I'm not sure of that is true but that is what a mechanic told my dad when he changed the fluid in his automatic truck.

yeah, I know about the risks of changing transmission oil on lhigh mileage cars. I did not do anything with the tranny and all the wires are connected but i will doubble check that.

Here is the update on the car. I did the atf trick and smoked up the whole neighborhood. engine runs stronger but I still have the problem of the car shutting off when put in gear. Also the oil pressure gauge has been ion zero the whole time. Not to mention the car is now leaking oil-- I'll get to that tomarrow. Tomarrow I am going to adjust the timing and the idle screw that is right on top of the intake manifold. Oh yeah I bought new plugs going to put them in after running some injector cleaner in there.

Well I'm having a brain fart and can't realy think of anything, but could the gear sellector be out of adjustment, or maybe were it goes in to the transmission it is loose. I guess that might be worth checking. If you figure it out let us know
