Junkyard Gold....MX-6 GT (Turbo)

So I was in the yard yesterday looking for Clokker's "Easy Hood Strut" some FC wiring connectors and a gas cap when I stumbled across an old school MX-6 GT. Judging by the body style it seemed likely to proper gas cap, which it did. For those of you unfamiliar ..........................

Then I moved inside to the connectors, went to town clipping those out, I was able to get 15-20 without much work at all (removing door panels). I could have really stocked up if I scoured the engine bay and felt like pulling the seats to get at what appeared to be and amp and an ecu under each.
As was getting out I happened to just barely notice, under the turn signal arm what looked to be a window switch...low and behold it is the same as the FC switch! (one minor difference being that it doesn't have the wire extension on the back side).

As there was no boost gauge or turbo badging it was at this point that i realized it was turbo (the turbo had been pulled from the one I found). before moving on to that however I noticed some other useful tidpits:
Obviously the fuse box is filled with goodies...
The Afm looks to be very similar to the S4, and the elbows for it and the TB could be retrofitted for a custom intake setup.
The coolant overflow and windshield wiper tank caps are the same.

ok, on to the fun stuff...
So looking at the IC it looks vaguely similar to the TII unit, except that it appears to be a little thicker and is set up for a FMIC configuration stock. Some have moved the stock IC to the front for better airflow, this unit might make that task even easier...

note: I didn't pull it because I didn't need it, but it looks like the inlets are a little smaller than the rotary unit.
So how did the fmic get airflow? well that's what led me to the part I found most interesting...
The stock IC and radiator are fed in part by these bumper ducts that channel air through the bumper support and (in the stock application) down toward their respective heat exchanger. Also the grill looked to be about the same width as the bumper cutout I had planned for my VMIC duct....

As I was leaving I also noticed it had front and rear mudflaps which might be easily adaptable to the FC, if only there was an FC.

I was wondering that as well, but eyeballing the bolt pattern they didn't look the same, plus these mirrors are a bit clunky , even when compared to the non-aerodynamic jdp folding ones for the fc

I decided to grab both (ducts and grill) to do some mock ups....
Option #1
I already had some makeshift ducts in my S4 bumper (cut w/ a pocket knife as my VMIC was being welded up....

The MX-6 ducts have rubber blocks in the bumper that double as ducting and bumper reinforcement. It wasn't hard to slip them behind the FC bumper, and theres just enough room for both of them (they are spaced farther apart on the 6)

The vents channel the air downward on the mx-6 because of the location of the intercooler and rad, so all I had to do was flip them upside down to channel air up toward the v-mount. To finish it off I would just need to figure out how to trim and mount the inlets into the trim of the bumper for a stock-like appearance....

Option #2
I thought the grill might actually make for a cleaner looking install, and more simple as well. The stock mounting tabs would obviously need to be trimmed. The angle of the face of the grill actually matches the bumper quite well if it is tilted slightly forward....coincidentally this channels the air slightly upward , which is where it needs to go anyway.

Close up of the girll.
It is slightly thicker than the trim, but people have cut ducts thicker than the trim and those didn't look bad.... I think I will end up carving up this bumper pretty good trying to figure out fitment

With Option 2...yes slightly.
Keep in mind that for optimum airflow you only need the duct opening to be 1/3 the size of the surface area of the heat exchanger. (don't ask me where I read that...lol).
The dual ducts are actually a little larger than the holes I have already cut.

That's some nice junkyard scavenging.
It's pretty amazing how much, once you start looking, would interchange with (or be a useful addition to) our specific cars.
That's why I rarely know what cars I've been cannibalizing...I just look at parts, not whole cars.
Did you mean "mirror" instead of "window" switch?
Chances are that steering wheel would fit, too...

Lol, yes I meant mirror switch....damn time-locked editing.
Indeed! most of the time I'm lucky enough to have an FC in the yard to go test fit parts on, but not this time. Plus it was getting late and my help had to go.
Good point about the steering wheel. Looks like they just added a third spoke to the hideous and flimsy S4 bi-spoke. A much better option if it fits IMO.

The Wheels will swap out as the bolt pattern is the same.I had an Mx6 and and RX7,,E-I-E-I-O..and on his farm he had a..........sorry,got carried away!
What yard was this at? I usually hit the one on Normandy since they are the cheapest.
I ended up with a set of mud flaps from a 626, they fit decent, but just dosent settle with me.
Also, not sure if you are interested, but the yard on Normandy has a black vert. It still has the aluminum hood.

There are many salvage yards in jax, more unsavory ones than I care for. I've never been to the one on Normandy though. Reviews look good. The one on Hwy17, which happens to be closest to me, is run by thieves, and their inventory system sucks.
