my car is an s4 but i don't know what year the motor is.

he said it was a direct bolt in so it must be an s4 if the s5 Jspec motor requires some modifications.

also the Jspec SMIC has a different sticker doesn't it? or it could possibly have been the USDM one...

Look at the back of the LIM. if you don't see an EGR, chances are it's an Jspec S4. Also...S4 engines have a flapper MAF. it's a big silver rectangular thing under the airbox. If it's black and cylindrical, it's an S5.

S4 JDM distinctions.
Fuel lines reversed the FPR is on the primary rail next to fire wall.
No EGR valve.
No plastic PD.

S4 to S5 distinction the TMIC uses 2.25in instead of 2in inlet if I am not mistaking on the exact size of the S5 inlet. None the less the S4 inlet is smaller.
No TSS
Little bigger TID
Plastic upper coolant neck.
Smaller rounder AFM, does not use flapper door.
Clutch fan has 5 fins compared to 9.

You mentioned a SMIC, all FC's come with TMIC. I do not recall a Mazda ever being released with a SMIC. Ether FMIC or TMIC..

bloomer - WTF???? You drive a rx7 FC3?????

WrongWay - That pic PWNS!

Correct, see my avatar. That's the JDM IC label.

The obvious things to look for are:

- the IC label
- FPR on primary rail, PD on secondary (reversed from US engines)
- twin-scroll actuator on the rear of the manifold (US's on front)
- no EGR
- no AWS solenoid on UIM

It's 2.0" versus 1.75".

Also, if the "Rotary Engine with Intercooler" sticker is not obvious enough, the rear corner opposite the IC outlet (passenger side for U.S.-spec) will have either one or none fittings.
U.S.-spec will always have 2 fittings back there.
If I'm wrong about this, I'm sure someone well correct me.

The IC's with no fittings seem to be very rare, but J-spec IC's definitely don't have two fittings, because one is for the AWS solenoid that J-spec engines don't have.
