Intermittent Wipers Problem (switch?)

ok so my intermittent wipers wont work. and when i turn my wipers off they just stop in the middle of the windshield. when i put it on intermittent it just goes up about halfway and stops.

im assuming all this is cause my some sort of relay that is supposed to stay on until the wipers get back to the bottom of the windshield. is there a switch or something i can check that must be broken...maybe i need a new relay?

has anyone run into this before, and how did you fix it?

-Matt

Actually to rebuild a switch sent in, it is only $45 for a front only wiper switch (including convertibles), and $65 for a dual (front and rear wipers) wiper switch. http://www.mazdamark.com/serv01.htm

Of I have already rebuilt wiper switches for a reasonable price as well.

I just didn't have time to look it up. When I finish my 5th and 6th port problem I'm going to
send you mine for repair.

Just replaced mine

I just replaced the relay in the wiper switch for my 87 GXL and it took about 30 minutes (not including the time to remove/replace the switch), because I was being really careful. It worked great so I removed the one on my 88 vert project car and did it as well. I have not tried it yet, but am confident of my soldering skills.

I bought the relays for $5.73 from Digi-Key (plus a $5.00 handling charge because the order was so small).

Here is a link to directions on how to replace the relay:

http://tal.ontero.net/home/RX7/Wiper+Switch

If you are not confident with a soldering iron you may want to pass on this procedure. You could screw up the PCB if you are ham-fisted.

Of course that is just my experience, your mileage may vary!

Except that description has you drilling/busting a hole in the side of the case, in a very very weak corner of the case.

And I have the relays as well, but with no mininum order BS

Right you are

You are absolutely right Icemark. I did not feel the need to drill the hole, but used a set of hemostats to grip the relay from the front and pull it out. This was done after melting the solder and using a desoldering suction tool to remove it.

Like I said it is probably not for those that are not proficient with a soldering iron and comfortable around a PCB.

I made a note about you having the relays for future reference. Good to know!

Thanks!

This is my version of do it yourself wiper switch repair instructions. It protects the housing and is a little more straight forward:

as a reminder I will be at the Nor Cal april meet in the Bay Area, and if anyone needs to pick up parts there they can, and as always if you pay cash at one of the California meets, I pay the sales tax and you don't have to pay shipping.
