Interior Water Leak

Hey guys...

So I searched this one out, but couldn't find anything similar. I have an 88 GXL without a/c. I'm getting this water leak on the passenger side that is coming from the blower unit (the heater core is dry and the stuff coming out is water not coolant...I did the taste test!) The leak only occurs when it is raining (which is all the time here so it is freaking annoying), and is dripping directly from the vent that exits the blower unit before heading towards the heater core. Any suggestions on how the water is getting into the blower and how I can fix this?

Thanks for the help guys!

did you close off the openings to the A/C when you removed it?

To answer a 8 year old revival thread..(hey Woodstock called and wants this thread back..lol!!..)
The sunroof drains are in the A pillars.
If you take the interior pillar off and pull the headliner out a bit you should be able to see the connections of a tube that runs from the corner of the sunroof and snakes down the A pillar.
If it rains and that tube is not connected then ..Voila..instant Water in your car.

i don't have a sunroof, any other common ways for it to get in? what is suppose to keep it from getting in the blower motor housing from outside?

The fresh air intake in the wiper cavity is a chimney-like affair, there would have to be several inches of water to make it inside to the blower fan.

Looking under the dash you'll see the three elements of the HVAC system. Furthest to the right is the blower motor assembly, in the middle is the AC evaporator and far left is the heater core/main distribution box.
You can (pretty) easily remove the center box without disturbing the two ends (if you have no AC, this box will be empty) and begin to determine where the leak is coming from.
Most likely would be the heater core.

If you are convinced it's NOT the core, you have a problem because there's no other water source that's supposed to be there...you have a leak and it could be anything from open holes in the firewall (like where the AC hoses used to go) to the windshield seal.
If you can't definitively pinpoint the leak, the dash has to come out.

Hi I know this is an old post, but I have the same problem. Did you ever find the source of the leak. Thanks

Having parted out a few FC's, the fresh air intake part of the firewall, as I recall, is prone to rust. You might be surprised what you find back there if you pull everything out.

Literally came on the forum to search this exact problem, and boom. There's this thread.

I'm having a similar issue, but I'm not sure where it's coming from. I get a slight leak only at high RPM. The fluid that leaks is HOT. If I'm driving and it hits my legs, it's like getting splashed with grease while you're cooking. Not hot enough to really burn you, but it does sting. The amount that leaks is only about 1 oz, maybe less. I've tried smelling/tasting it and can't tell what it is.

I've thought it could be one of 2 things, and maybe someone can help me narrow it down.

1. The heater core has a pinhole in it, and leaks a bit of coolant when the water pump is really going and builds enough pressure in the system to push some fluid through the pinhole

2. The speedometer cable o ring at the transmission is bad, and trans fluid is wicking up the cable into the cabin, and spilling out onto the pedals.

Any insight is appreciated! Sorry to thread highjack

I think I have the same problem. . . .. You can poke your head down into the driver area and look up behind the dash. You should be able to see one of the water line connections to the heater core. I know mine leaks a little cause every once in a while, and only when it is hot, I can smell a little tint of antifreeze in the cabin.

Another sign is the inside of the windshield will get a hazy film on it quickly after cleaning it.. . say a couple weeks..

In order to fix that I have to remove the dash and I have been putting it off.

Our heater cores are getting old.. . And the tubing to the heater core is getting old.

Yeah in retrospect, heater core seems like the more likely issue. Fluid doesn't really have much of a smell. If it was gear oil, it'd be pretty obvious.

Welp....guess it's time to pull the dash and tinker with it

Thanks I will remove the blower motor and have a look up. As the outside can't get access to the fresh air vent
