Intercooler Options

I've been looking around at various FMICs, and have decided that I don't want to spend $1000+, and hack up my car.

I got to thinking, and wondered if the stock intercooler could be made much more effective with water (or possibly washer fluid - evaporates faster because of alcohol) sprayed on it and a fan to always force air through it... this make any sense to anyone? Are there any top mount intercoolers for the TII that are superior to stock? a water-to-air would be great, but water spray would kind of give the same effect, with far less hassle, I think.

I'm probably going to be running 12+ PSI (and possibly eventually 20+), and the stock intercooler has difficulty with the stock 5.5, so an upgrade is necessary, right?

Well, I am trying to make a bolt on fmic kit for less turbo ii's for less than 400$ US. Ive made mock ups of a few low cost fmic's. None of them have fit so far w/o clipping the frame (or something like that). Since you dont have a motor right now, my suggestion is to watch the canadian forum for when Im done You dont have to buy a kit or anything, but Ill post what core I used.

But yes an upgrade is necessary. IMO, even if you are boosting 10psi its worth it to get a fmic.

I'm Curious to know exactly what it takes to make an intercooler??? My friend works in a machine shop, and can basically make anything! All I need to know is the actual construction of one because I don't have one I can give to him! Can anyone answer this??? If so, I'm sure we could produce quite a few for a very cheap price! If anyone has any info or related webpages can you please post them. Thanks

cool... I realize that eventually I'll have to go to FMIC or a real water-to-air but for now I'd like to stay top mount.. Do you think my water sprayer will work? I've also thought about water injection (lower temps = higher boost!), maybe do both in combination.

The water sprayer will work, but the more you use it the more you have to refill the bottle. It wont always have its maximum affect at all times (like a fmic). Youd have to turn it on and then turn it off afterwards. Plus if the water didnt evaporate, it will just get really hot while it evaporates, sitting under the intercooler. A water sprayer on a fmic will allow any excess water to drip off. The TMIC has a back plate which might make it pool. Dunno, you might want to try it out and see what happens.

Yeah, I've got an idea that will let it pulse... as in spray for 1 sec then idle for 5, or something along those lines

I don't mind having to fill a water bottle every now and then if it saves me $900+!

I've seen it tried. It doesnt work worth a pinch. Everybody goes FMIC for a reason, it's your best bet. If you want to keep using the stock IC remount it up front. I am in a similar senario, I have decided eventually i will have to bite the bullet. I am interested to see what Drox puts together.

I don't WANT to use the stock IC, I wanna just not hack up my car

I'd like to be able to put it back to stock if I ever sell it or whatever
thats why I've been looking at water-to-air and spayers, etc.
maybe water injection is the way to go...
dr0x's idea looks cool, we'll see if it works

I think IAN didn't have any cutting to do to install his Greddy FMIC kit on his 10th AE...check with him.

He didn't even relocate the battery. Great plumbing job!

An intercooler is basically just a heat exhanger like a radiator or oil cooler. The core would be difficult to make.

You could do something like this, although you would need an aftermarket hood to take full advantage of it.
