For those considering a budget DIY FMIC (and can’t find a Starion one), you’ve actually got half of one already. A popular mod over here is to use two stock intercooler cores welded together. You can do it one of two ways. You can cut the smaller (inlet) tank off each one, file it all smooth, butt the two cores together end-to end (tubes touching each other) and weld it up. This doubles the size of the core exposed to outside air, but the total internal tube area remains the same (just longer), so it won’t flow better but it’ll cool better. The other way is to cut both tanks off each one, lay them side-by-side and fabricate longer tanks to go over both cores. This doubles the exposed cooling area and the internal tube area. You can also replace the inlet and outlet spigots with bigger ones. Yeah it’s a bit rough, but it works quite well and it’s really cheap if you (or a friend) can weld aluminium, since most of the cost of an aftermarket IC is in the core.

I recently did the starion IC. Unlike most I put mine between the rad and rad support to avoid lag. I used 2" ID mandrel bent steel tubing from summit. The piping cost me 45$ shipped, and then I used universal 3"(too big but worked)heater hose as couplers at 30$ for one foot, cuz they are cheaper than silicone.
I cut the inlet off the TB and JB welded in a 2.5" ID 3" long pipe, that points toward the fender. Sounds ghetto but works fine! So the end results kick ***. Absolutely no noticable lag, and very minimal pressure drop. I think most of the avoided downsides are due to my having used a small 2" piping. My turbo is still stock so... But I no longer have heat soak issues.
Forget any one telling you its a waste of time, I love mine, and with the cost of the IC it only cost about 150$. My advice is have all nice smooth bends in the shortest path possible
Good luck
Fred

What do those starion IC's cost, they look reaaal nice under there. I want to get a FMIC with a border front end. Then I'll be all happy!

Another good DIY FMIC for a TII is a large volvo unit (volvo 240??).
It's 18"x28"x2.25". It BARELY fits up front there, basically the largest possible IC you can fit without extensive modifictions. All you have to do is adjust a couple of the rad mount possitions slightly and it fits.

Ford Powerstroke 30"x18"x2" $225 and buy it now for $260, there are about 8 or so of em on E-Bay

You'd have to cut it up, but its a large core that you can spare for cutting apart

The giiger the IC the bigger the lag and pressure drop. I had the NPR on mine once, and it sucked with the stock turbo.

i am still learning about all this stuff, as are most of us i guess, but i have heard from people who drive really mean rx7's that the starion fmic is a POS. are you wanting the starion ic because youre on a tight budget? if not id reccomend looking a little deeper into different intercoolers. FMIC is a big mod, and i think that if youre going to do it, you might as well do it right from the start you know? again im no expert, this is all stuff ive heard from buddies as well as read on the forum, so if im wrong, please someone let me know...thats what im here for, to learn more and more about the wonders of the rotary!

Node, you get your FC tomorrow right? Also, I need just a good easy to mount FMIC. I'm not looking to blast up to 12PSI or anything, I just want something reliable, relatively affordable, and easy to install!

the BOV should be as close to the TB as possibly, this keeps all the air flow in the right direction minimising re-boost time when the TB is opened again

If intercooler efficiency/size is somewhat determined upon horsepower output, what was the Starion hp rated at??? Weren't those turbochargers smaller as well????

I'm not trying to be a smart ***...Just food for thought... All Japanese (if not all others) turbocharged cars, by design, have one thing in common, the "Bypass valve" is always mounted before the intercooler. The bypass valve's primary function is to reduce sudden load damage to the turbocharger and while keeping it in spool, it allows for better response. Closer to the turbo allows less back-up and a shorter route to expell pressureized air back to the intake.
If you choose to blow off air(dosen't help, sounds cool) do you choose to blow off the hot air before the intercooler or waste the cooler and now, much denser air that has already passed the intercooler???

I try to use aluminum if possible.

Warning, these things are NOT cheap!

If you're on a budget, J.C.Whitney sells decently priced mild steel pipes for less.&nbsp These are going to be a lot heavier and rust easily versus the aluminum stuff!
