How do you mean alternate part? It's an intake air temperature sensor and you would replace it with another one of the same...
I also wouldn't suggest having a rotary as a DD: because it's a rotary...

Haha, I love my FC as my DD! Makes driving to work fun. As for the IAT, I can't help you other than the obvious options. Just figured I'd stand up for the Rotary DD population

I've had too many rotaries fail on me to be used as a DD. Besides, my truck gets me 27 mpg anyway and I drive quite a lot. If you're asking for another DD, I'll sell ya the Maverick. Assuming you'll take care of her well?

As far as the part is concerned, you can try part matching at Mazda / Ford dealerships or auto-zone. I've unfortunately not been able to find any of that kind around here for cheap or quick. I guess order same day shipping or next day shipping from Mazdatrix is all I can say...

Which IAT? Engine or AFM. Car should run with either disconnected.

Sounds more like a vac leak or a stock throttle cable.

Rotaries make for perfectly fine DD, they just don't suffer fools lightly, which unfortunately makes them incompatible with the majority of america.

high idle is usually due to a stuck thermowax. warm the engine up and feel if the lines to and from the BAC are warm or not.

Get outa town.

I not only DD my S4 TurboVert, but have driven it across country several times in the last few years as my Texas friends can confirm.

If you maintain 'em, they're just as dependable as any other car if you maintain them.

i'd trust my TII to drive across country as well, unlike most other cars i have owned.

just have to watch the temps climbing long steep hills, the big T70 likes to generate alot of heat even when out of boost.

I daily drove RX-7s for years. I only recommend against it because there are more people incapable of doing so than there are capable ones.

To the OP, if it is indeed the IAT, try a dealer. They probably won't have it in stock, but turnaround at most dealers is a day or two. Mazdatrix is great if you're not in a hurry and don't have a conveniently located dealer. Otherwise, dealers are just fine.

Thanks for the input guys.I recently did a tune up,new everything.
I think I tightened the throttle cable stop nut alot, can that be an issue of the high rpm?

I found the IAT is also used on 92 3.0 MPVs,so ill look for one locally in the mean time.

Karack- thanks,ill check the thermowax

if there's tension on the throttle cable it sure could be the issue.

every rotary i've ever had is more reliable than my 2009 jetta...

the IAT is shared with the 89-98 MPV V6's, 88-95 929, and probably a couple other cars.

AutoZone has them. See the attachment. WAAAAY toooooo much money for that part.

I'm sure any RX from 86 to 91 have the very same part. Buy one from the wrecking yard or from the PART FOR SALE on this forum and pay no more than something under ten bucks.

This part should not fail over time. It's a simple part. As long as the prongs are not broken off a used one would work just fine.

The ECU will default to a given temp if the thing is disconnected. I forget the default figure. Probably to a figure like 80*F give or take some.

Tight cable is probably your high rpm problem from what you wrote. Cracking the primary plates open just a touch causing the high rpm.

See jpg attached. Price TOOO HIGH for that part.

Thanks Hailers......the price seems a bit steep, these cars are stupid rare down here in my town.ill be checking the tension on the throttle cable as well.

So a broken prong will cause a check engine light?

Thanks

A broken prong is the same as the plug being off the sensor.

The ECU does not kick codes because of a sensor being out of range. All this ECU is capable of is knowing whether the plug is on a given sensor or not. In this case it senses the plug not being connected so the ECU will default the signal to the figure in my second jpg in my post above.

That sensor can be found on any series four RX turbo or non turbo and should be gotten for cheap bucks. Like five bucks used.

I've accidently left that sensor off my cars in the past and never had a clue it was disconnected til I latter found it off. It does NEED to be working though, so fix it.

yeah... Mazda's msrp is $70.43... part number is N326-18-845. they go bad on the MPV's,so we actually used to stock it at the dealership, but in 2012 it'll be special order
