Question Instrument Cluster - resetting the Miles

I'm sure I could get It right, should I do a little tinkering with It. But I wanted to reset my Kilometers to 000 000 to commerate my TII Conversion which Is due shortly.

I wanted to know If anyone has done this and If they have any tips to doing It.

I searched which yielded me zero and please - no flaming. I have absolutely no Intention of selling me car In the near or far future.

Wouldnt resetting the odometer create some problems with your insurance company or other maintenance that records mileage on the odo?

How about us people who are swaping gauge clusters between cars, ive got a GXL that just underwent a TII conversion, the GXL has 130k on it when the TII gauge cluster only says 95K, can i just hook it up to a dremel or something?

ummm...it's easy...

Remove the guage cluster and pull the clear face panel off. You don't need to get into it any more than that. The numbers on the odometer are not a lock-n-place type, you can generally move them with an eraser of something.

Also, all you have to do to avoid legal issues in if you ever get it re-titled or registered or sell it note that the odometer reading is not the correct reading.

*note: this is illegal to do to any car. if you do this car the next place it goes has to be a junk yard can't sell it.*

that being said there are 3-4 was to do it based off of the od pre electronic ones a drimel/drill in reverse to the od wire, running in reverse, taking it appart and moving the numbers. are the ways to do it. it depends on how mazda made them the reverse driveing prob will not work.

hope that helps.
*no I have not done it to any car that was not in a junk yard already*

I did it once. I took the speedometer out and carefully rotated the gears in the back. They are plastic gears like you find in a wind up toy so you have to be careful. Start from the 1's column and work your way up. If you start setting the larger numbers to zero, then work your way down, the larger numbers will start counting up for each time the number below it hits zero. Hope that makes sense.

again it's only illegal to sell the car with with a false odometer reading, and only then if you didn't point out that the odometer was wrong. No one's going to send a car to the odometer if the title states "exempt) under odometer reading or if on the bill of sale it states that the odometer has been altered.

on carfax reports of my cars before I bought them, there were odo readings at some of the emissions stations when they were tested. So the next time you go for emissions you might get screwed. Don't do it, it's dumb and definitely not worth it. There's more to mileage than just an engine.

The only I way I could justify doing something like that is if you bought a used guage cluster with higher mileage and wanted to retain the selling value of the car you could roll it back to the correct reading for your car.

Again, as stated from the beginning, I have no Intention of selling my car. So Insurance, ethical Issues are Irrelevant. For the sack of argument, and If I do choose to sell my car, I would gladly let the buyer to be aware of the alteration.

Thanks for the replies.

Geeze, the amount of misinformation astounds. You do NOT have to junk a car with a bad Odometer reading, hell, my FC would be junk then, as I have a new cluster in it, which had 88K when my stocker had 92K... guess I better call up the wrecker-

Silverrotor, you should be able to do it as mentioned, just slide the numbers with an eraser, going right to left-

silverrotor, dunno what state you live in, but I know atleast in Maryland, Virginia, and Washington DC it's a 1000 dollar fine for tampering with the odometer. I would just call up your local DMV and find out what your state says about it.

Tampering with your odometer, even in MD, VA, and DC, is a violation that falls under fraud. Fraud can only be commited if one party lies to another in order to schieve certain results. Donate money to me to save to lil poor african kit with the fly on his left eyeball only to have me spend it on a new 13B S5 block is fraud. Messing with the odometer and telling any potential buyer that the odometer has been altered is not.

If you want to be ultra-legal about it, no matter what state you live in, have the car re-registered and in the box that asks for the total mileage check or write exempt. This makes mileage inadmissible anywhere for any reason...but if you're not going to sell the car then it doesn't make **** if you replace it with a flux capacitor...just do it and don't worry about it.
