Does anyone have instructions on how to replace a convertible top on an 88'. Is there a website they may have illustrations?
Thanks

The factory service manual has 60 pages on this, not sure if it's on this forum but it is definitely on the 2nd gen forum, once you're a member just go to the FAQ pull down on top of page the manual can be downloaded in pdf form there, here's the link

Ummmm... take this one to a shop. I sure wouldn't want to try to do a convertible top...

It would be a bitch-and-a-half to do it right without experience. To save money you might work something out with a shop where you remove/install the trim pieces and maybe the inside headliner, and leave the difficult parts to them.

I looked at doing it myself, but after looking at the FSM, I wouldn't touch this job with a ten foot pole.

The guy who did mine bitched up and down about it, just go get it done, it isnt so simple as it may seem, hopefully you didnt already buy the top because a shop can get it alot cheaper then you can and that buffers some of the labor.
A robbins top was going to cost me $550-600 I believe if I bought it myself?
Guy supplied and installed my top for $750, and I KNOW he made more then $150 off it. He asked me for a $400 deposit, so my guess is the top cost him that if not less. And yes it was a Robbins top, I seen the box and the top before he put it in.

What I did....

was go to my local mazda dealer parts department and ask who they send their upholstering work to. Ask them to give them a call in introduction, that you are SUCH a good customer.

You get two things this way.

1. A pro that has done this a few times. So you won't be his guinee pig to learn from.

2. Probably a price break on the labor since you were sent by one of his BEST customers.

Good luck!

FSM is very good for replacing the top. However, it is a very difficult job, and should not to be taken on by someone will little experience with automotive interiors.
