installing tranny without pilot bearing??

hey guys well i took out my tranny a while back to isntall a new clutch and pressure plate when i took out the trannyi notice inside the old pilot bearing had melted itself onto the inside of the eccentric shaft making it impossible to yank out even with the pilot bearing removal tool... anyways i had to dremel it out as i did but no matter how much i dremeled the new pilot bearing would go in hard and bind inside.... so i managed to install the tranny even with the somewhat binded pilot bearing but now car will not go into any gear.... i was wondering if i take out that pilot bearing and reinstall the tranny without the pilot bearing what would happen??? i was told that the pilot bearing all is good for is just to help put it in first gear????
really need the help thanks

you need it . the tranny will not shift properly. You need to drill it out the best you can.. on a side note . I had this same thing happen to me. Not fun and drilling it out was the only way i was able to get it to work. Take the New pilot bearing and measure up the diameter. Get one just under the size of the outer diameter of the pilot bearing. carefully drill away. Try putting the new bearing in. If its still stubborn then take a dremel with a stone or sandpaper and carefully round it out to get the bearing to fit.

also... when mine went bad, i went to clutch masters and had them make me a pilot bushing... cost me $30 and they said it will be stronger and last longer.... but yeah, you have to have the pilot bushing, it also keeps the input shaft of the tranny from slopping around in the eccentric shaft.. potentially damaging the shaft and the eccentric shaft

i tried the dremel issue... but i think i went to far so now my problem is the pilot bearing can go in but doesnt seem to stay in =/... but question is does the pilot bearing affect the tranny from going into gear???? cause i just checked the fork you can see it being pushed in when i press the clutch so oviously thats working properly any other ideas???? any idea tho on how it would react with no pilot bearing?? i already know im gonna have to replace eccentric shaft. (when i rebuild).. but i wouldnt want tranny to get damaged?

Ive removed them with a tortch befor. Take a pair of calipers and mesure the inside bore. Find the spots that are off and hone them out.

Did your bearing come with the little stopper? The bearing is a friction fit, so if you opened the hole to big it wont stay in place. When I changed my clutch I found 2 destroyed bearings in there, one on top of the other and neither was working. I was driving my car without problems for months before that.

The pilot bearing is neccesary. You might have to get a pilot bushing made if you screwed up the eccentric shaft.

Yes, a bad pilot bearing can keep you from getting into gear while the car is running. Try it with the car off, if it can kind of go into gear then yes, the pilot bearing is bad.

the bearings and splines on the input shaft will wear quickly without a pilot bearing.

I just had a thread about this back in the spring, did you search? I was asking the same thing basically

Just remove the old one any way you can (the tool is probably best) and put a new one in any way you can. As long as it's centered in the eshaft everything will work well.

Make sure you align the clutch disk properly to avoid destroying the next one!

So you don't have a pilot bearing installed? Have fun killing your transmission input shaft, transmission input seal, clutch disc and dealing with the associated fluid leaks...
