installing pilot bearing seal
here's one for the FAQs, which way does the pilot bearing seal go in.
i had taken mine out before receiving the new one in the mail and seem to have miss placed it, GO ME!(i had laid it down inner side face down, but that still doesnt help if you dont put it in a good spot). not to mention it was REALLY tore up, i believe, beyond recognition

yes it does, thank you.
and to get more detailed, i guess if someone else has one thats all metal on the outside; the rubber side that jack mentioned has more of a flat rubber deal goin on where as the other side (facing out of the eccentric shaft) is sort of recessed and flares towards the center.

Installing the seal can be tricky if you've never done it before, and most people seem to knock 'em in there way too far.
Grab a socket the exact size of the seal and put a small 3" socket extension on it. Lube up the e-shaft (Your bearing should already be installed, the same way, actually), and gently tap it in with a hammer or with the socket wrench; whichever.
The trick is to tap the pilot bearing in far enough, but not so far that it hits the lip inside the back of the e-shaft. Then when you tap in the seal, you obviously want to contact the bearing itself, but not be too far in the e-shaft.

cause saturday i put it all back together and after just now reading what was posted by Acesanugal i remembered that i may have tapped it in about 1/4in in past the opening. if it really is that big of a deal i may have a nice learning experience on my hands and have to remove every thing again just to pull it back out a bit.

yeah, i realize, i may have f-ed up a bit, and may even f up my pilot bearing trying to pull it back out a bit (and even have to replace it again), but just how important is it to not go all the way to the lip in the back of he eccentric shaft, cuz i may have gone that far? anybody?
i wont be able to get to it until this coming weekend

o yeah it was a bitch, but i got it. another thing i found was that when i installed the tranny last, a sliver of the seal broke off and got pushed all the way back past the bearing so this time i went really slow, not that i wasnt tryn to be carefull before, but dam its hard to do by yourself. the only person i could get to help was pushing on the engine to angle it.

The pilot bearing seal is not Essentially a big deal.you can put it in or not bother.
it holds the Lube into the pilot bearing..I've seen alot of jobs done where they don't bother with them,or reuse the old one.
it's a 3 dollar part though,so,what the hell,If I can get it,I throw it in.If I plan on dropping the trans later though,I can live without it.
I'm the type of Guy that will change Clutches because the name of the clutch sounds better than the old clutch..so,If I am changing stuff out that frequently,I can put a seal in later on,and change the Pilot bearing out also.
Whatever Though,Is not to reuse an Old pilot bearing,.I did that once.,.Never again!
