Installed 8" touch screen in the visor!!

Well I decided to run the Aircon system and I needed a place to control it from so I searched forever to find this, it was at MP3 car, decent price nice specs and it fits well in the space.

First I took pics of everything
then cut into the visor
measured it up, cut and formed the bracket
measured for the mounting holes and drilled them out
went to ACE to get the mounting hardware that fit in the holes on the back and bottom of the monitor

Now it is off to upholstry to match the headliner.

It'd be a small issue, just one that you may forget about until it keeps dropping down in front of your face when you hit a bump.

Exactly the same thing I was thinking.

I used to have a small Alpine remote EQ control panel in there, that was 1/4 of the size of that panel, and it kept falling down all the time.

Gonna need a whole spring assembly to keep that bugger up.

And you sure hacked up the visor cloth... what's up with that????

OK here is the "floppy sunvisor" fix.

This will work on any floppy sunvisor however the upholstry will need reworking.

To do this you will need a bolt and a nylon nut or a regular nut and a nylon lock washer use 10/24 or slightly smaller
you will also need a drill and a bit of apropriate size according to the bolt size you choose

after you uncover the framework you will see a black piece of spring steel wrapped around the upper part of the frame a little less than midway from the right. Shown in the first pic with the hole already drilled in it. after you find it and drill a hole near the bottom of it big enough to fit the chosen hardware, I used 10/24 but you can go smaller if you want but no bigger than that. I used a long bolt that I will trim down after I post. once you drill it and put the hardware on tighten the assembly to the desired stiffness. This is very sensitive a 1/4 from contact is almost too much you may also want to use locktite to keep it from getting lose.

I had a friend that did that in his supra, he installed a motor like thing that u push a button and it turns however much u set it for and then push it again and stops where u put the stop, forgot what it was called but i could find out...works like some cd players where u push a button and it like "rolls" down and stops on the stop but also has a reverse that winds back up

The aircon must be wired through the carputer then you just bring it up like a program

i think its an interesting idea.... i like it alot. i might do it, but i wont put it in the visor cuz i have a vert and that wouldnt work for me. if you have a chance and want to do a write up on the wiring for the aircon touch screen that would be cool. and to all the haters..... you are just mad you cant come up with cool ideas. its call new and different.

I'd be less worried about the extra weight flopping it down all the time, and more worried about it coming loose in an accident and adding air conditioning to your skull.

Ever bash your face on a sunvisor. It HURTS!! It is heavy gauge wire frame and broke my buddys glasses and nose ( I wasnt driving by the way). However if you are wearing a seatbelt you cant hit it (at least not at my height). But if you mean it actually coming off? That CANT happen the mounting frame wraps around the visor frame and then is secured in three places onto the monitor all screws have loctite also. It could eventually losen up but as for catastrophic failure, not possible.

EricRyan Yeah, never underestimate the power of velcro.

OMG!!! VELCRO!!! Bite your tounge (it crossed my mind, but only on a motivational level) This car has way too much into it to use velcro anywhere other than on the rear carpet in the stock velcro use locations.

Anyway I fixed it as you can see above.

As far as the wiring goes it is pretty much as follows:
run the output wire (some type of paralell port on the control unit) to the Carputer then run the second (or third in this case) monitor output to the touchscreen all of this is done with standard computer connectors.

The mounting to the roof for the visor is pretty old and weak plastic.

I'd say try and rethink the anchor system. At the same time you could also design somethign to help keep it stationary.

Now a quick and ghetto approach woudl be to use a ball socket with the screw in the side.
You see them on Camera tripods and stuff.
A small screw by finger tightening into the side of the ball increases pressure and prevents it from moving.

The ghetto part woudl be that you would have to unscrew it a bit each time you wanted to open it but it's a guaranteed way to keep it up while driving.

It is fixed already. Believe me it is so tight that it takes two hands to rotate it down. The problem is not the ball ( the ball moves smoothly). I am making an adapter flange that goes between the plastic ball receiver and the body to change the angle so that when the visor is up the the ball is all the way down to remove any possibility of the ball causing any slop. At this point there is no more problem. The plastic on this car is in exceptionally good shape and I have no fear of breaking it at this point.

I think that is freakin' sweet! but I think if I had the money I would put a touch screen in the glove box door. To me it seems easier to reach than on the vissor but I could be mistaken. Good job with that car man it's going to be insane!

Thanks, the 14" monitor in the GC gets in the way of that plan. I couldnt find a nice big touchscreen that would fit or I would have just run it that way and left the visor out of the plan.
