I did this on an 89 coupe and had to remove the entire dash to really do it right. You can split the carpet at the console, but I was affraid the carpet wouldn't lay properly in the car. The carpet was from ACC out of Alabama. I can tell you the replacement carpet is no where near as good as the original as far as fit and insulation. The carpet I used fit well except in the front passenger side. The cost was around $ 225 including the rear area, which the convertable will not have. It is in short a pain in the *** to install due to the way the console is made a part of the main dash assembly.

There are no venders that sell direct replacement carpets for the 'verts that I am aware of. You can use a coupes kit, but it will not lay like the factory carpet does behind the seats.

Also yes, you should unbolt and remove the dash, shifter and majority of the interior to fit the new carpet in.

i say just buy some carpet from like home depot or something itll be alot cheaper than going to the factory and spend a whole lotta bank plus with carpet that you buy u can strip off the old in one piece and then measure it on the carpet then cut it out

DON'T just buy carpet!!!

Do yourself a REAL favor and purchase "Custom Molded" carpeting for your car. Don't even think about the less expensive "Custom Fitted" style. Here's the difference:

Custom Fitted (or cut) carpeting is cut and seamed in the corners. Then these cuts are sewn together resulting in lumps and large wrinkles.

Custom Molded carpeting is put on a "plasticized" backer and heat molded to a steel floorpan. This will allow the carpeting to lay just like the original and will have all of the heal pads and wear pads already attached. These kits come with extra carpeting around the door openings and the console areas so that there will be no gaps. You just trim off what you don't need.

If you just go and buy carpeting by the yard, you will be severely disappointed! Also be aware that you can get auto carpeting kits with standard short loop material (like '60s autos) or cut-pile plush fabric like newer models. I am a complete auto enthusiast and have done my own upholstery on American and Foreign cars for over 39 years. I learned from the best in the business. PLEASE check out all of your options BEFORE you go to buy your carpeting.

Best of luck. OH, and yes....the dash DOES have to come out.

I jus installed carpet from Victoria British. It was custom fitted like allenbillings said, and fit was marginal at best. It took a while to choose a comprimise. I ended up with a decent fit but with crooked wear pads. For the money I spent, I would have prefered to make my own custom fitted carpet, but I am also the kind of guy who doesn't mind taking a lot of time on a project.

Take the dash out when you do it.

Custom Fitted

Hey! PJ-4.2L,
Was that custom fitted or custom molded carpeting that you bought? If it was just the custom fitted, I can understand your disappointment. If it was supposed to be custom molded and fit that poorly, I would have returned it. I have never heard of the place where you purchased it. Where are they located?

Just custom fitted. Victoria British is a company specializing in restoring cars-- they have a catalogue for RX-7s. I got their carpet kit. Do a search and I am sure you will find more info on them.
