Initial tuning with SAFC, need suggestions
i have just purchased an APEX'I SAFCII and a DEFI D-series air/fuel ratio gauge. i have not tuned a car with anything like this before, so i was just wondering if i could get some tips on where to start? eventual plan is to of course go to wideban it on a dyno, but i think i should be able to do some intial baseline tuning with the air/fuel ratios.
it is an NA S5 (S5 ECU) with an S4 block. exhaust is straight.
i am getting pretty big flames right now.
if any more info is needed, just ask...

yes, i know. like i said, i just want some initial basic tuning done. with the air/fuel ratio gauge i can pick a fairly conservative ratio (13.0-14.0) and tune to that, can i not? i can also set a good baseline 'range', so that when i do send it to get widebanned they already have a rough idea on how far to go...
also, i don't trust most of the places around here (closest place is about 1.5 hours away). a lot of places tune so that they push the lean limit...can't exactly do that on a rotary...

also, when you first start using it, does is not adjust anything, or do you need to adjust it manually to get to stock settings? i just don't want to be driving around with bad settings before i can get it to a dyno or datalog it basically...
also, is stock O2 sensor adequate for the air/fuel gauge?

u have to set it up...it doesnt adjust automatically. check: www.1300cc.com and he shows u the intial programming stage.
i thought i remembered reading something about that there^
thanks for reminding me...
also, should i sell my A/F gauge and get and EGT gauge, or is it not really needed?
seeing as how the SAFC gives you the O2 sensor voltage, that is just the same as the reading i get from the gauge (except the gauge gives you an actual ratio)...

alright...actually what i was referring to (as whether or not it adjusts automatically) were the settings like the throttle % and stuff. can i just leave everything at 0 and it will be just like stock?
thanks
thanks
If it's a NA, you don't have to worry quite as much about detonation as on a turbo. NAs *can* detonate, but it's reasonably hard to do so - I know some people on the forums have tuned their NAs with the "butt dyno" and not had problems.

Just had my N/A S5 Dyno Tuned SAFCII yesterday. Basicaly i forced the shop to have me involved through the whole process to know exactly what they were doing. I made them give me like 10 printouts.
The only area that neede real tuning was from about 5800 RPM up to redline.
In that area the AFR drop from mid to high 12s dn to low11s and 10 at one point. After the adjustment in that range it imediatly got 10hp and 1 or so more with a little more tweeking but didnt produce any more power above about 12.8 AFR.
That was actually true throughout the powerband. above about 12.8 no power or torqe gains were seen. They did roughly 12 4th gear runs into redline with adjustments inbetween. Basically any adjustments made below 5600-5800 didnt do much. At no point below about 8200 RPM was there anylean condition stock.
Also as long as you do the inital setup correctly the factory AFC settings do not make any adjustments to the AFM signal until you do. Thus, a correct install will not modify the cars tune at all untill you start playing with the correction settings.
I have RB downpipe presilencer and mufflers, and an APEXi intake.
Again the only gains made were at max hp near and at redline.
