Im new to Mazda.

Hey, so I'm new. I'm actually a big Nissan fan, but I'm loving all the new Mazda's coming out. Plus I love the RX-7's. Mainly 2ndGen's.

I have a few noob questions. I know I should search. I am, don't worry. I just don't have as much time like I used to. So I'm just looking for a little advice and tips.

My main goals for this car is just to drift. My Nissan is the 'daily driver. All I really need is some names. I.E. 'go look at Tein's stuff or this...that.' etc.

Also, I checked that sticky on the years. It's pretty long. Anyone wanna help out...what year is the best? I'm looking for the 90's mainly, but just in case. Just need simply answers. Like what model, what year, etc. All stuff just to aid my research.

Who are the big guys on this forum? Who are the mazda gods? Haha. It took me a little while to figure out the Nissan folx, so I'd just thought I'd ask. Like who has the best deals, who makes parts for you guys, who knows the most...etc. All the guys I'm going to look up to in the future.

And anything else you guys can think off. Engines, rims, company's to buy from, things not to buy, etc. Anything that can help my searching go a little easier. Anything you found helpful in the beginning.

I'm sorry if this bugs any off you. As a big Nissan guy I can see how newbies can get annoying. I'm no where near the most knowledgeable, but after being on the forums all day for 7 months. I know a thing or two. Haha. Thanx for the help! I hope to see some of you folx in the future!

Right now the 88 is considered the best FC, with the 91 following.. although you must remember that the majority of the people that voted in that poll voted for their favorite year, or what they own, rather than the best year overall for the FC.

I know that the 88 is well regarded, because it was the 10th anniversary year and Mazda really made an effort. However, I think that the '91 is superior simply because of the engine. The engine is a fairly significant improvement over the 86-88 engines and by 91, they had things humming pretty well. I have a 91 and love it to death. 140K and running strong.

I have driven several model and years of RX-7's over the past 8 months and I have to say that the 91 GXL and the 88 vert were the best to drive. The owners usally kept them in fair condition and the engine felt just right. Oh, and I hate the automatic seatbelts so I bought an 88 vert. All beautiful things should go topless.

Those are about the slowest FCs ever, lol. You just haven't driven a fast FC in good condition I guess.

There was no 91 GXL. In 91 you could only get a Coupe, or a Convertible, or a Turbo.

There were not GXL or GTU, or SE models in 91.

The "significant" N/A engine improvement only netted an additional 14 HP at 6500 RPM and almost no torque improvement what so ever.

The N/A engine in the 91 was the same as any other series 5 (89-92 FC) and the intake (that provides you with the only real HP upgrade) can be retro fit onto any N/A S4 (86-88).

The S5 cars are typically the heaviest, had a softer more isolated suspension, had cheaper parts, and in the USA had mouse belts. That is why the 88 is currently the most popular. It was the height of the simpler, more connected RX-7s.

And many of the true RX-7 enthusiasts call the 88 GTU the true 10th AE, while trying to forget the GT luxo cruiser that was the 10th AE.

Thumbs up Welcome

Wecome to The Mazda side. I must admit I like Nissan's and can still do a 240sx motor swap and put a SR20DET Red top in them =) but I will always be A Mazda loyalist first(Nissan is second I love the Z seires Skylines and 240's) but enough about me. Icemark is correct but before you ask what year or model ask your self N/A or Turbo

Welcome to the brotherhood. One piece of advise, use the search function and read your butt off. Everything you can imagine has been asked at least once, if not more.

good luck

I was close to falling for the piston-ated S13 when I first started out in the Import Scene. :P

But when I found out about the 2nd Gen. 7, it was game over! On top of all that, Mazda is somewhat "re-invented" now, introducing all these great new rides!

Besides all that, I agree with GentlemenVII - NA or Turbo should be the first thing you should ask yourself. I went with a series 4 NA ('87) - with longterm future plans of going Turbo...

:-/ if you want a drift car that's easy to learn on i would go with an 86 (i have one) or a nissian 240. My rx is more of a grip car then anything it's actually pretty hard to drift the sucker...but when you can mannnn do you gain so much exp.

Yeah, or Mightyslash! Post count is a terrible reason to assume that people know what they're talking about. There are a lot of people who "enjoy" posting but have never even touched an RX-7. Just ask lots of questions, and take everything with a grain of salt. Eventually you'll figure out who knows their stuff and who doesn't. Enjoy the rotary engine!

P.S. If you're buying a turbo, forget the 89-91 and get an 87-88. After mods it'll make just as much power, and it weighs a good bit less. Better for your drift car.
