Idle question (not a bad one)
Just looking for some info...My car is running fine, revs all the way to the redline (I **** my pants the first time I heard that rev buzzer). Idles smooth etc....Only thing is that sometimes it idles at 750, other times it stays at 1100-1500. And I can bring the idle back down tn 750 by just putting it in gear, and lowering the idle by dragging the engine down with the clutch. Once I release the clutch. It stays at 750. Seems a little odd, and I read just about every idle thread in the history. Just wondered if anyone had seen this before...

is this only on start up?
if, so the engine usually revs up on cold starts in order to reduce warm up time. it usually settles down pretty quickly. most cars do this. it is more noticeable with bigger engines. if you start up a newer v8 it sounds like your foot is on the gas.

Oh its long after it warms up...it isnt even a reallly aggravating problem, but it is nagging me a little. The car does its 3000 rpm cold start stuff, then backs down, and usually hits 750 as advertised. If you rev the motor, it runs up, then back down to 750. Then heads to 1000-1500. Like I said, you can bring it back down with the clutch and it will stay there, no problem. Almost seems like something is sticking slightly. Just wondering what mechanism controls the gradual decrease from fast idle to normal idle. I read something about Thermowax so i am guessing thats part of the equation.

Yeah, this one is wierd...Doesnt seem to be affecting too much else though..I am thinking that I will try to clean around the engine tomorrow and see if it clears it up. Can you tell me what exactly controls the idle from after the 3000 surge till it eventually lowers to 750?

Is it a smooth run at 3000 or does it seem rough??
Is it surging up and down (whum, whum, whum...you get the idea) between 1000 and 1500?
If it is, you have a misadjusted TPS- look at the other threads on how do adjust it.

No, its smooth the whole way around...and it doest surge, it just idles a little high. And like I said, if I lower the idle with the clutch, then let it idle normally, it just stays at 750, happy as ever. If I hit the throttle, it revs, then runs back to about 1100-1000. Then I can lower it again using the clutch. Once I take it outta gear again, it just stays at 750. Seems like a minor problem, and I am not complaining. Just wondered if anyone ever heard of this.
