I own an 87 T2 and it has some idle problems. It will idle but it will constantly pulse between 750 rpms and 1200 rpms and when I rev it up and let off the throttle quiickly, the rpms will drop to around 500 and go back to the pulsating thing or it will die. Help please.

Check for a vacuum leak. That was the problem on my 86 N/A. It did the same thing.

 

I had the same problem except mine pulsated from 1300 to 1500. I believe it was a vacuum leak. But I never found out cuz I blew the engine. 8)

 

agreed, i think its probably the vacuum lines

replace the lines and see if it still does it.

 

1) Make sure there are no vacuum leaks
2) If the throttle plate gap is too wide, idle will pulse
3) Try setting the TPS by the twin light method. Then verify by checking resistance

There are a bunch of things which affect idle. You have to eliminate each one at a time. In my experience there has not been a magic button to push that will make idle OK. Search the forums. There have been bunches of posts on similar idle problems. There's no substitute for doing your homework.

But that's the thing, what do you do to actually check to see if one is leaking? Pull it off or something? I kept hearing about checking for vacuum leaks, but at the same time, have no clue what to do when it comes to checking it. I'm assuming you pull them off...

 

No, you shouldnt pull them off. The easiest way is to spray carb cleaner or starting fluid around the engine. When you here the rpms raise a little than thats where the leak is.

 

spray carb cleaner around the engine bay...when your idle starts to smooth out...your spraying near a vac leak...

 

This process should only be done in Park(for Automatics), correct? The only time I deal with my idle bouncing(500 ~ 800 more or less) is when I'm at a stop light in Drive. Other than that, once I'm in Park, it idles perfectly. But i'll spray anyway. Anyways, once you find the leak, replace the hose, right?

 

no...just duct tape them....of course you need to replace them. as for being in park im not really sure. thats kinda weird that it doesnt happen when your parked. and it works on any car...just spray until you find where its being sucked in. then you have found a hole....do this until the idle is clean and smooth...if you cant find more holes...suspect other problems.

 

You really didn't have to start your answer like that. All you had to say was, "yes, replace them."

Edit: I just recently, adjusted my CAS, so I can understand why my idle is bouncing in Drive, just as long as it doesn't stall out or start up hard, then i'm happy.

dont worry about it...im pretty new to the RX7 scene and i had the whole vac probelm too. its a bitch to fix but its gonna be done...i just replaced all vac lines and it did the trick.

 

Yea I will be doing that soon because mine will actually stall out if i drive her hard when i come to a stop...

 

I just fixed the idle problem. All I did was adjust the idle speed on the BAC. Idles as smooth as a babies bottom.
