Idea for an Auto start button...

When it comes to auto start buttons, some people get all pissy and say:

So I did some thinking... and have come up with a **** on the steering column where the key would normally go that clicks between Off, Bat, and Acc and perhaps a start button in the center of that or some other location....

how about in addition to this power **** and start switch, we put a keypad immobilizer so that way you have to enter in a 4-6 digit code to press the start button? Problem solved, and perfectly keyless.

I plan to make one, but before I attempt it, I would like your input on the idea, as well as possible good places to get keypad immobilizers from..

i don't know why don't you buy a car with the whole key pad **** in it already. seems like a lot of work for a wow factor. although i am a fan of push start and will be doing it on my track car because i have problems with my knee turning off the ignition while driving. so i am moving my whole lock cylinder to another location. but the whole keypad thing idk i don't like it.

If I went out and bought a car with the whole key pad...

1. It wouldn't be a Mazda RX-7
2. It would cost more.
3. Where is the fun in that?

btw I believe I have found a 3 position push button rotary switch, I will be contacting the company that makes it shortly, otherwise I will settle for a 3 position rotary with a separate start button. On second though I could have the rotary switch on top of the push button inside the steering column.. that would make it easier than buying a specialty switch...Personally I don't mind the immobilizer, I am already putting a GPS Tracker in the car as well in case the immobilizer is bypassed.

thx, I like it, its cheap and I could build my own keypad for it if I wanted The only downside I see is that I will have no use for my rotary key blank.. unless I use it for the doors...

You would loose the steering wheel lock if for security by using your little ****. Steering lock is not just security, but also comes into play when parking on hills and you crank and lock the wheels.

Now if you did something like on the RX-8 GT models or the BMWs with remote keys, where there is a transponder that locks out everything unless the transponder is within a couple of feet of the car, then that might work, but now you would activate the steering lock unless you built a solenoid into the column's key switch replacement assembly.

Also most of the DEI (Automate, Viper, Python, Clifford) remote starts all have inputs, so that a single push of a button, not only cranks the car, but turns on the ignition and accessories as well.

hahaha! I think you're a little late.

btw, I think a push button starter would be cool. I would attempt to make one, but I'd probably just mess up my car.

Well, how about we take a vote or post a poll on this? IMHO, I think the keypad is useless... Think about it..

Situ1 - You enter your car with significant other, you look at other and turn vehicle on, drive away smoothly!
Situ2 - You enter your car with significant other, you look at key-pad to press and enter digits (should look like part of car or else it looks funny), your keypad fails due to poor wiring and you're both stuck.
Situ2.1. - You press wrong keys and delay time, no longer smooth.
Situ2.2. - other can remember the combo from you pressing it in; thus, they will now have access to engine start...
