Well, then build the engine, install it, start and let it run for a little while. Then properly store the engine. Starting it every week fairly bad for the engine, since it will never reach full operating temperature. You will build up condensation, contaminate the oil, etc.

A proper breakin means DRIVING the car under changing conditions.

Yep, I agree with Aaron here. In no way should that be considered a break in.

Breaking in an engine occurs with the engine under load in driving conditions and requires the full range of RPMs. Not just 1500 and under.

I also think trochoids answer is good as well:
So here is what I suggest. Let Dad drive it back and forth to work, In the evening or on the weekends, offer to buy gas for the car and go for drives. You can spend some time together, breaking in the motor, learning a little more about driving and more about the car.

I think you should put some crappy tires on the back and power-brake for 5-10 minets a day!!

Store it until you can really drive it. You gain nothing by idling it or starting it now and then.

learning how to paint is a pain lol, i didnt read up on it and just went straight at it, i went through bare metal throughout the entire car, would have been 4000x easier if just sanded and primed the paint, oh well live and learn

well looks like the majority of people are telling you the same thing. Don't run it until your breaking it in. Store it and wait it'll be hard but imagine that when you get yor liscence you'll have a brnad new rebuild wating for you. I would start it and make sure it all works then store it like arron sugested untill you can drive it. The problem is that it needs a load onn the engine. I'm sure you can find little things to do to the car over the next 4 months, and tiny little things you can think of. but i think only bad things can come fromletting that thing idle too much

Just wait it out man. You could chance it and take it out at around midnight and drive it around your nieghborhood and stuff once a night. Im sure it would be broken in by then.

If you have little driving experience I wouldn't recommend it, if you get caught you are seriously fucked, well I know you are if you live in canada
haha yea driving a rx7 without a licence is fun! i did it once during the daytime hahaha ... man i was sweating bullets hoping not to get caught or something

I don't really see what the problem with running it around at night is? hehe...

I mean, the first time I drove my rx7 after the rebuild (and before the bad things) it didn't have a hood on it, quite a few other electrical things weren't working right, didn't have insurance (for the car, I'm insured as a driver though)... and it is still registered non-op... it was pretty far from a street legal car. Anyway, I just drove it around put-put running through the gears to 3500, shift, 3500, shift, etc. Took it for a sunday cruise through the canyons since they're out of the way, not much traffic.. got some funny looks.

Then I put a wrong color hood on it (red hood, black car) and was pretty much driving it to work. (Almost made it there too..=/)

Being that you're an inexperienced driver I'd guess you can't do the same... but your dad could easily put it around without it being totally legal... just don't go blasting along past the speed limit and you won't get pulled over, no problem.

I was going to take mine out for a spin... but it would have gotten stuck on the ice, snow, mud mixture trying to get to the road. Not insured... not registered.. not inspected... just got it yesterday and running today

One more thought.
Is your car stick or auto? Do you know
how to drive stick? If not I would
sugguset learning on something else
instead of a fresh rebuild, due to
missing a gear and over reving or
something. If you know how to drive
stick, hang out and dont drive without
a permit. It will be worth the wait to
do it the right way. Ive seen people
do some stupid things because they
could not wait. You have got a good
start, dont mess up.
