I rebuild a alt. and now it blow up. Need help!!

Well like the title said i rebuild a alt. and it blow up. THere is the story. My friend's T2 alt went out, the problem was that it stop charging. The alt wasn't charging at any rpm. So being a good friend i rebuild it for him. What i replace was the bushing and voltage regulator. It worked for a little bit and the voltage jumped up to 18 volts and dive right back down to 12 volts. WHen i took the alt apart. The regulator was fryed and two of the diodos was cracked. so my question is what did i do wrong? Is it a bad regulator? , short in the alt, the ecu it self? I really need some help asap. Tomorrow morning i am goign to replace the diodos and the regulator again. ANy help is welcome!!

you didn't replace the cracked diodes? you probably fried the new regulator by reverse polarity jumping across the diode bridge- make sure you check each diode with a meter (after isolating them from the circuit) for reverse polarity leakage before reinstalling them...if you don't know what I'm talking about, maybe you shouldn't be playing with it in the first place...

Sounds like the stator is permafried, mine did this when some solderpoints got a bit too hot and shorted the alt.

Time to get a new one
