I need A First Car

Hi, I am looking for a first car to get and to possibly learn how to work on engine. I had a turbo II in mind because my uncle had one it and maybe it didn't look like the hippest car out there but it hauled. Ive got a shitty nissan frontier now. My dad is permitting 3000 from his account to a car that he will approve. Could a turbo II be reliable enough to drive around daily. Also I don't mind maintenence, its just the fact that some new liquids cost a mint. From what i heard about rotaries they are touchy but simple engines.

As long as you are prepared to work on it, it should be alright. Keep in mind oil should be changed every 3k if you are concerned about the cost of liquids.

good luck, you won't find any car like it

You can find one in decent shape for 3k. You might have to wait a while before you find one though.

If you wait it out you can find a good one for $2000(S4). Or you could always get one with a blown engine for cheap and have it rebuilt. That way you determine how long it lasts and how well it is maintained.

You could also go for a NA FC. You should be able to get alot more car for than price than you will with a 3k TII.

Mintrx7,

Do you have a 2nd gen? Where in NSW are you I have seen a good condition FC for $9000 up here in the blue Mountains. I will need about 3 jobs at a time when i'm 16 to be able to afford one of these. Also, you got any price ranges on other 2nd gens you've seen or heard of in Aus?

if its your first car and you dont have that much free cash, you might want to stay away from a TII. Even if the owner says it was recently rebuilt, you dont really know how the engine was taken care of. and if it needs a rebuild, thats going to be a couple grand to get fixed (even if you do it all yourself, its still around 1k). I'm saying this because thats the position im in right now. I spent 5k on a 90 TII i thought was in great shape, with what the owner said was a recently rebuilt engine. now i found out he just swapped in a jspec, and the coolant seals went about 3 days ago. (3 months after i bought the car). Theyre great cars, but they need to be taken care of, and theres just no way of knowing for sure what the previous owners done.

How about...

Have you considered a 1st gen? They are cheaper, easier to work on, cheaper to get parts for, can be just as fast, (or faster- they are considerably lighter!) would have cheaper insurance than a TII, more reliable car...

If you really want a good first car, I'd suggest a carburated 1st gen. The GSL-SE is more electronically complex- stick with the "cheaper" cars. (although the GSL-SE stock is pretty quick for a non-turbo car!) The 12a can be replaced with a 13B if you want- keep it carburated for simplicity, or put something like a megasquirt fuel injection system on it. You can get 170+ RWHP out of it, (a good bit more than a stock TII) in a car that is about 400 lbs lighter- it'll spank a stock TII so bad it wouldn't even be funny. And, you can find a NICE 1st gen for $2k or less.

Brad
