I got my TII

Hey guys,

I got my TII, here is what i found out on the drive home so far (est 60 mile drive home). Luckily the car didn't stall and nothing serious. When I shift to 5th gear, it grinds, unless i double clutch, any way to fix that?

The idle is usally at 600-700 rpm, but once in awhile it starts to fluctuate a little, like to 1k rpm. Sometimes i think it might stall, is that normal?

Body is clean, little gadgets don't work windshiled wipers, rear defrost.

These car are gas guzzlers.....crazy how much gas i used....

Car passed smog...barely though. 10mph, max = 1057, i got 1027, 25mph, max = 919, i got 911.

Compression i don't know, but i will be buying a new engine anyways in about 2 weeks, this car has 160k miles and i'm surprised how well it runs.

All in all, happy that i bought it. and i finally get to say that i'm part of the rx7 club~!

Congrats. How much did you spend? As far as the 5th gear, I think your only hope is to try some redline oil in your tranny.

Sounds like it's just in need of a little TLC.
New plugs, and if you are concerned about emmisions- check the cat.
Definately use some injector cleaner- it's been known to work wonders for these cars.
And the idle fluctuation- does it flutter up and down, like whup, whup, whup? If so- adjust the TPS- you will find threads here on how to do it- prabably needs it anyways.
As for the fifth gear grind, well, MAYBE try repacing the shift bushings, it probably needs those too, but it may not fix it (but it might). Tranny additives might do something.

Wipers- it's the switch. They ALL ssem to go after a while- bad relays/too much current, cause arcing, and carbon buildup on contacts.
Search- You will find threads here on taking the switch out, cutting the top of the relay case off, and sanding/cleaning the contacts. Guaranteed to work!

Bad mileage eh... welcome!!

Synchros in the tranny are bad. Try some redline synthetic in the tranny, if that doesn't help, you're lookin' for a rebuild or a tranny replacement from another car. (probably cheaper)
Check for vacuum leaks, idle should be between 750-800 rpm. Try spraying carb cleaner all over the pipes and listen for a change in idle speed, this will indicate a vacuum leak. Does the idle depend on on load (A/c on, heater on, etc.?)
rear defrost: check fuse, then check for continunuity of the heater strips and wires leading up to it. Check for good ground on the strips.
wipers: common problem. Wipers only work sometimes, or occasionally? (most likely its a $6 relay that needs to be soldered in. stock ones carbon up and quit working)
try running the engine up to redline a couple times. Should help clean it out of carbon, and heat up the cat and burn out some ****. Try a new O2 sensor as well, and maybe a new air filter (for emissions). New plugs would help too, and new wires never hurt....
Why buy a new engine without knowing the compression numbers on the one you got? Wait and get some compression numbers, then replace the engine based on that. I'd rather spend money on mods than replace an engine that doesn't need it. You won;t get any extra power with a new engine, unless you go ported. And, if you do get a new engine, get it street ported!
Rx7 engines rarely run slow, they either run great or not at all.

Sean Cathcart :

the only reason i want a new engine is cause this one has 160k miles.... That is alot of miles for a TII imo, i rather go the safe route of getting a new engine. The reason is I go canyon carving alot, meaning my rpm's are always gonna be 5 1/2+ to redline and maybe further.... (don't know what car can handle). I usually go 1-2 a week too.

Thanks for the advice, will try all. Hopefully i don't need a new tranny, but I rarely go in to 5th anyways... even driving freeway i drove about 80 mph and kepted it in 4th gear. and rpm was only at 4, and it didn't sound like my engine was even trying hard.

Bambam7:

The idle does got whup whup whup at around 600-800, then once in awhile it goes whuuup to 1k, then goes back down to whup whup whup at 600-800.

TonyTurboII:

I bought it for 3500

If its a 89-91 it will like higher than 7000 rpms a lot more than the series 4 TII's, due to lighter rotors. More around 7500-8000 rpm redline on the later cars.
I personally would invest in a set of struts (KYB's or Illumina's) in your case (corner carving) and some springs before putting money into an engine. The engine could last you another 40,000 or more miles, or it could die tomorrow. You never know until you get a compression check. IMO, Its like buying a new car b/c the one you got won't start and you don't even check if it has gas. I will agree its a few miles on a stock TII motor.
But its your money.
I do recommend getting a STREET PORTED engine as your next replacement though. You'll pat yourself on the back for it.

Bad fuel economy - probably just needs a tuneup, new plugs, wires, and possibly a TPS.

My TII did great on the way home in fuel economy. 2.5 tanks from Maryland to GA - not too bad

New engine? Why don't you just get the compression checked, and if that is bad, get a rebuild on the engine? Congrats on your TII, I wish I had one. I don't want to bust your nuts, but if you don't know what a TPS is, I'd spend time learning about the car rather than think about pulling the engine and putting a new one in.
Oh don't mind me, I am just jealous.

Cheers

Thumbs up congrats dude!!!

they will charge a hour labor probabaly, but its worth it. you may find out you dont need a motor right away then you can do some good mods 1st. you could always run some premix for a little added life. from what you say on the run home you got yourself a decent motor.

let me just say if this is your first rex prepare yourself cause you will fall in love with it, lol. your girl will get jealous. these cars are addicting!

all in all, enjoy the new TII dude!!!
