i broke the diff i think

Hi i have a weird problem an need some advice please

i have a 87 S4 N/A With a open Diff

now i was driving an redlined it an slipped in the clucht an idid not go any where just made a weird sound an rattled the car an then i have no gears but reverse

so i pull the trans an see that the pilot bearing is fried so i replace it an put it back together an try to test my work by starting the car on jack stands an see if the rear wheels turn now

so i put it in first an i get the same noise an the wheels bearly turn so i put the e brake up an try again the engine turns but wheels don't

so i look under the car an see the drive shaft is turning too so does this mean i blew the diff

If the clutch is engaged, and you see your driveshaft spinning, I would assume your diff is broken. Wait for someone a little smarter than I to respond though.

If you blew the diff, you shouldn't move in any gear. You said you still could use reverse, which should not be possible. I had a ring gear lose a couple teeth in the original diff in my car, and that made horrible noises when I limped it back home. If the ring gear in your diff has exploded, there should be some loud noises coming from the diff as the wheels barely turn.

If the driveshaft turns but the wheels don't the diff is toast.

I stripped nearly all of the teeth from the spider gears in my open diff and I was occasionally able to move the car but it was not driveable. They are most likely what you broke.

The diff is not difficult to replace but is a PITA and I recommend having at least one other person on hand to help.

You never said, but is your driveshaft turning a constant speed while it is doing this?
