I'm sure this will be up debate, but yes I have run a T2 motor on a NA rear ... It held-up fine, however no drag-launches etc ... I have also run a welded diff for drag, however you will not be able to turn very well. Tire squeal and hop on any turn more than 20 degrees or so.

if your looking for launches get a diff with a 4.3 ratio i belive the 88 GTU came with it. I'm not quite sure though. I'm still doing resarch for my Miata gear trans and rearend.

auto's came with 3.90 sticks with 4.11. GTUs came with 4.30. Find a auto GXL s4 . It has a 3.90 LSD you want.BTW. Clutch type lsd in s4 gear type in s5

86-88 are S4

89-92 are S5

There is a FAQ at the top of the second gen page that should show you what each model came with, but the auto tranny cars had 3.90 rears, the 5spd cars had 4.11 and the GTUs cars had 4.3 rears. Note that there is a difference between the GTU and the GTUs model. The lower case "s" designates a different model then the GTU, it doesn't mean "plural" like you normally see in the english language.
