how to mod
how to mod
i have an 87 T2 that i just picked up with only 50k on it and i want to start moding my car. but i dont know much about the turbo set up. what mods should i do so i dont have to worry about my car. i heard if you do intake and exhaust you may be running to much boost. so what should i do for mods in order?
if you add a new exhaust, its most likely your going to need to port your wastegate. 3" straightpipe is extremely free flowing and will easily overboost. Get either a FCD or a standalone as to not hit fuel cut..but dont forget fuel.
FCD and a walboro will cost like $150 if you're thrifty and would be the best place to start. if you start throwing exhaust/intake on there you're leaning out the mixture (more air) and risk detonation. (which will wreck that rare low milage motor ya got
)
)
FCD = Fuel cut defensor which tricks the ECU into not cutting fuel to the rear rotor at high boost levels.
A standalone is a form of EMS which controls the engine and its operating functions.
You will learn a lot by reading the faq thread at the top of this page and readinve the various threads in the archives. You will also find a lot of past discussions on almost any topic by using the search function.

Where do you guys look for these Tii's. I hear everyone getting them for soooooo cheap (700, 500, free!!!) I always check auto trader and look on ebay. Any suggestions, please do. I finally have enough money to purchase one, but can't find many at all!

Umm, first mod is a FULL TUNE-UP lol. Replace hoses, plugs, wires, o2 sensor, fuel filter, prof cleaned injectors, coolant flush, oil change.
Then begin to mod, 720cc secondary's, walbro, afc, fcd, exhaust,intake, boost gauge, egt gauge(not in that order necessarly).

Don't try to mod your car overnight. Learn how a rotary works, how a turbo works, and what each of these mods are intended to do. Don't just do it (like Nike) for the sake of doing it so you can say "hey, I ported my this and removed my that". Have a goal for your car, whether it be 1/4 mile time, rear wheel horse power, maybe you autocross and want to beat a certain time on the track. But set a goal. Sounds like your have a nice decent car. If it was well taken care of, and you continue to take care of it, its not going to break down in the near future so you have time to read and learn all that you want and save money to do the mods you want to do.
Good advice, do the tuneup first, make sure everything is up to snuff...Its only as strong as the weakest point...Never forget the tires, brakes, fluids ect.
As far as mods go, you can go intake & catless for next to nothing money wise, while improving performance and upping boost while not going too far...Stock fuel cut is 8.6 psi, so you don't have to worry about fuel until that level is surpassed...
Congrats & enjoy her! The T2's are very cool cars! (I love that Turbo hood!) I love getting in mine everytime!
Good luck/skill!
