how many are too many

There is a 89 rx7 turbo ii for sale here. Its only $4000 obo, not too expensive. But its got 270 000km on the odometer. Im just a little concerned about the reliability. I havent talked to the owner to see if its been rebuilt or replaced or anything. But how many is too many km's for those turbo rex's? I have a turbo probe as it is right now. I want something faster though, with better handling. If I like the rex as much as I think I will, Ill be selling my probe (its been bagged to hell and back anyways). And are mods expensive for those cars?

That's not a bad deal... It's not fantastic, it's not bad... Depends on what you are planning to do with it. I mean, if you are going to build the hell out of it, it doesn't really matter how tore up things are... If you are expecting it to be perfect, well...

I didnt see any rust on it or anything. Looked good. I dont expect it to be perfect at all, I dont expect any used car to be perfect or it probably wouldnt be for sale I just wanted to know how long those rotaries usually last.. thats all.

hrm

Well 270 000km is about 168750m

I saw these ideal rebuild numbers somewhere:

86-88 2nd gens
base models - 250K-300Kmiles
Turbo II - 160-220K miles

89-92 2nd gens
base modesl - 180-220K miles
Turbo II - 130-150K miles

Are they accurate?

They are a little optimistic.

I would stay away from it unless you're willing to do an engine swap.

I doubt it's the stock motor. they usaly die around 100k miles or 160k km. if it's the stock motor, and it runs good. then dam it was kept care of!! and would probably be a good buy. just have money handy if it goes. if it's had a rebuilt aready then it's a pretty good deal too, unless it was done alonggg time ago. but $4kcnd is pretty good deal for a 89-91 turbo II as long as it's in good shape. latly the've been going for over 10k canadian here. but more like 150k kms. hell one sold here a few weeks ago with a blown engine for more then $4k

Well I found another. Same body, same year. Excellent condition inside an out. But there is no motor in it. $1500. Anyone have any handy websites that have motors for sale, hopefully in the western canada area?

Well www.mazdarx7engines.com sells rebuilt ones for like $2000 but you would need a blown one for a core exchange. There is also the jspec idea, but its kind of a coin toss on reliability with them. If you want one though get it from Dave at www.fc3s.org

Ditto. I'll buy either of the ones you listed, if you don't want them.

Jspec engines usually have about 30-40K miles on them before they come out of the car. Heres something to think about...

If you had 30K miles to use your engine, would you A) Take care of it and baby the engine OR B) Drive the hell out of it because you only have 30K miles till the government makes you take it out.

Some of the engines are good and they even come with extra parts like lightened flywheels, upgraded clutches, blow off valves. If the engine imported provides a warranty on the engine, then the risk of getting stuck with a blown engine isnt as big.

Ah yeah.. I get what you're talking about. There was something about a warranty on that site, but its all the way in cali. Too far for me.
