Talking How Loud?

OK here's a hypothetical....

88 TII

If I was to get a 3" pipe into a y-pipe into two 2 1/2" inch pipes with straight through mufflers....thats it.

How loud would this be?
How much boost could I push with everything else stock (Microtech and intake only)

I was thinking of doing this and then putting the stock cat back on in emissions need testing.

and which cat should i use for this the first or second?

should i just get a hi flo cat and leave it in?

will I need a resonator to keep it quiet?

presently on my T2 i have 2.5 inch dp, mid pipe, and RP catback (50mm). no cats. its not too loud. very nice tone. i've taken a few 7 hour trips in it and the noise isn't annoying at all.

dunno exaclty how much boost i'm running. the previous owner ported the wastegate, and i don't hit fuel cut at all...

I'm not sure about a TII, but on my n/a I had the same type of setup. 3" to high-flow cat to Y into two 2.5" pipes and through high flow mufflers. Doesn't make too much noise. I like the heartiness of the exhaust.

I have a '91 TII with a 2.5" downpipe to a Bonez Hiflow cat. Then it goes to an ApexI' N1 Dual.

It sounds amazing man. When standing behind it at idle it is deep. Plesantly deep And when you get on it is a sweet sound. It really makes me dislike these cars that run around that are loud. But it is a..."Who the hell is weedwacking in January!!!" loud.

However, my setup is loud as hell when cruising on the highway. A four hour car trip results in my ears feeling like just left a concert.

My friend put on a 3" midpipe with presilencer and no mufflers. Damn that **** sounded wicked. Almost scary. Wait to people who wanted to race it was scary. You could hear it for about six blocks away. He never got pulled over. If a cop was around he would keep the revs low. This was an N/A though.

Well, I have that straight setup on my n/a and yeah, it's loud. It drones at cruise, but I've gotten used to it rather than annoyed by it!

Everybody, he asked about 3" not 2.5"! A 3" with the same type of mufflers will always be louder than a 2.5" because of the reduced backpressure and the twin 2.5" pipes will have even less backpressure than a single 3". Backpressure is the cheapest, most effective muffler you can get, that's why factory systems are so skinny, because it's quieter!
On my last car (HB Cosmo with 12A Turbo) I put a full 3" system with just a single reverse flow muffler. It was loud but not too loud and sounded sweet, BUT after half an hour at 120km/h (75mph) I wanted to throw up because of the resonance! I installed a 3" straight-through bullet type resonator as well and the problem was completely solved with no loss of performance.
What I'd do is install the system you described and see if you like it. You can then add a 3" muffler before the Y if it's too loud. It's cheaper to add than remove remember!
Do Aussie FC's have two cats? Mine only had one. Isn't it illegal to but caught with none? Might pay to get a 3" one, it'll make it quieter too.

I'm gonna get the exaust done in spring , I was thinking Stock size pipe all made up turbo back through hiflow cat y-pipe to two hiflow mufflers. What do you think? loudness and boost? I want 8-9psi boost.

For those of you that are running 2.5" dp and hi-flow cat on TII. What kinda of boost increase did you see?

hey

I have stock manifold then bonez race pipe with presilencer and streight throu single exasut with a long billit muffler.. Its really deep but and starts sounding like a jet at 4k but doesent get much louder. Its pretty quite for a streight through exaust.. Everyone who hears it says its bad ***. I just wish it was louder..Im going to put on headers soon.

Does anyone know if the presilencers at muff shops would do just as good as the RB one that goes on the header?????????? Im going to make a custom exaust soon.

The turbo cars are a lot more quiet than the n/a cars. The turbine acts as a silencer.

My car, in the video posted above, is a TII and, has an open wastegate. The wastegate is much more loud than the exhaust.

I'm running 2.5 all the way back but still havent replaced the stock mufflers yet, it isn't that loud. A friend of mine runs 3 all the way back with a single aftermarket muffler and it's not that loud.

Here is my single 3 incher.

http://www.calinetworks.net/rez/movies/rezRX7T2.mpg

Before is my 3 inch single cat from turbo on back, but the muffler was a 2 1/2 inch in, 3 1/2 out.

the next one is my Apexi N1 3 inch in 4 1/2 inch out.

Single exhaust is much better than duel. Just my opinion though. Saves weight too. =)

My burnout sucks b/c the road was rough & my tires were bald. Didn't want to pop them.

ReZ311 can spin his tires. That's a shame man! If you had a decent suspension and tires, you would go instead of spin.

I ain't got the best suspension but, 5500 rpm clutch dumps don't give me wheel spin. You should check your suspension
