How To Know if Differential Broke?

I have an 88 TII and i'm getting a clunking sound everytime i hit the gas, bog, shift. The mechanic says the diff mount looks new. How would i knw if differential is fcked?

See how much play is in the rear end by putting the car on ramps. Put it in netral with the e-brake on and twist the driveshaft. Post back with your findings.

the mount might be fine, but the brakect could be cracked. Its also hard to see where the bracket meets the subframe from glancing under the car.

Chances are that the bracket is broke/cracked.

Are your u-joints ok and like said you may have to pull the dif mount bushing to see if it's ok.

well i dont knw really didnt look at the joints so hard but the rear differential is making a "grinding brake" sound. kinda like havnt bad brakes lol so i dont think its the joints

Just thought about the sounds you mentioned and have heard people say the driveshaft u-joints were the problem. Sounds like you have another problem besides the dif mount I think.

I don't think you will. The MOST likely fracture point on the rear is the mount/bracket.

Its *possible* you might need a diff, but get under the thing and verify the mount is fine before going out and looking for a diff. Thats the only thing the innanets can't do for you:
