How do you swap motors?

I've never worked on a RX7 how do you swap. Do you take apart the motor and tranny or do you do them at the same time? (pulling out)

You can do either, it is personal preference and dependent on your work area and equipment. FOr those experienced in engine swaps on 7s or other cars, it isn't a bad idea to just pull the engine. For most first timers, lining the tranny up in the car properly is a real challenge, so I suggest pulling it out along with the engine, because mating it back up on the floor before reinstallation is SO easy, and this reduces the chance for frustration and screwup.

There is a writeup on my webpage in the tech section about engine removal, with pics, removing the engine and trans both. www.rotaryresurrection.com

Hi,
I would HIGHLY recommend the Bruce Turrnetine video "Engine R&R for the Second Generation RX-7"

It has a very easy to follow, *detailed* step by step, as well as lots of real-world tips and tricks to know about these cars.

Well worth the $40. You can get it at

www.rotaryaviation.com

I bought it, and got a $20 vcr and remote from a pawn shop. I put a 13" tv on my work bench and the swap was a breeze.

I can't say enough good things about Bruce's videos.
( also have the overhaul video and got all the bravery I need to tackle the big job.)

if you havent ever worked on these cars...make sure you label everything as you disconnect it. Prior to swapping out engine I didnkt know much about my car, now I know the engine bay like the back of hand. but seriously, label everything.

I have lined the tranny up while laying on my back, and put it on. That was surely a real bitch, if you can pull it wout with the engine at the same time, i would recommend that

I've swapped motors only in front wheel drives. They always come out together. Bebesito21, this is exactly why I started this post, to get info from experienced members. Kel thanks for the video advice, will have to purchase. Thanks a bunch for your responses this will definitely help me out.

Give the guy a break, as he later points out he has mechanical aptitude. Maybe it would be easier to ask what his as done or is capable of and draw advice that correlates to his KNOWN experience level.
