How Do I Remove Stereo Console?

Heya, Im looking to do some light work on my dashboard and cetner console area around the stereo deck and I need to know how it all comes apart without breaking something.

Not only am I looking to give it a good solid clean (I like to do my own detailing) but I also need to put in a new stereo deck and I don't know rightly how the center area comes apart to let me do this. Or if it even does at all without removing most of the console.

So if there's a thread somewhere that has this info in it, or someone made a step by step, that would rock.

Thanks peeps!

If memory serves me correct:
Pull the AC vents off - 2 screws holding top portion on.
Pull the shifter surround off - 2 screw holding bottom portion on.
Remove center console. 4 screw holding radio support (if it's stock) to the dash.

Ah, I suppose I should have mentioned that it's an 87. I pulled off the AC vents and got those two screws but when I pulled off the shift cover, I don't see any other screws. The frame around the console it'self looks like it's close to coming off, but it sticks around the ash tray and lighter area as if there are screws there. But I don't see a way to em.
Suggestions?

Maybe pull the ashtray out? Been a while since I pulled either on my cars but you're close.

1. Remove the air vents
2. Remove the shifter boot
3. Remove ashtray
4. Remove 2 screws from right behind the top of the air vents.
5. Remove 2 screws from behind the ash tray

6. Stereo Surround should pop right off

At least thats what mine took when i removed it today

Can you explain how to remove the shifter boot. I got everything else besides that and the console won't come off.

get on the underside of the surround and lift up. it'll pop off from the corners it's easily done with your hands and it wont break.

oh... one more thing. be careful when the surround is ready to come out. you have to unhook the plug from the cigarrette lighter.

I was working on it with my dad. He figured it out before I could tell him. We installed a Sony deck on it and some Optima speakers. Nothing great, but its a big upgrade from the non functional S4 system.

Thanks for the help!
