how do i clean engine internals better

Okay, so i took my engine for a field trip to clean it at the car wash with degreaser.
Failure to remove most of the dirt

444 rags and about 3 gallons of gas later
still dirty.

how the HELL can i clean my rotors, housings, etc? so far i've degreased, brake/carb cleaned everything to death, gassed it, i've even used acetone for some stuff. It's as clean as it NEEDS to be right now.. but just for the hell of it i wanted to make one really shiny. What do you guys use to clean your stuff?

Simple green, purple power, a scrub brush, a wire wheel for rotor compressor surface only, and a half an hour.

oh yeah, i meant to mention that... i've buffed and wire wheel'd my stuff to death... any tips on making the surfaces on the sides of the cast irons/inside of the aluminum pieces smoother short of lapping them? currently I put them on a mill with a wheel to lap them and let it do its thing to make everything all smooth and such. I'm looking for a better way because that is a PAIN and it takes FOREVER.

Remember, though, if you're not planning to replace the rotor bearings I do not suggest soaking them in that stuff for so long. I say this later in the thread when someone asks.
