Question How to create shortened shifter???

I have read that a few of you guys have cut down the shifter to make it shorter than re-threaded it. What do i need to re-thread or create threads after i cut it??? what do i use to do that?? also where can i find them and how much do they cost??? thanks for any help.

fc3s.org found that the shifter is 2 parts. The bottom is in the top part. He told me that if you take vice grips and twist the top part hard enough it will come loose & then you just put a new **** on it. I am going to try this soon enough.

it was my understanding that Daves suggestions were for a 89-91. The 86-88 used a different shifter.

What year is your car littlejep ? you don't have it on your profile

My shifter came "shortened" when I got it. It looks like it has been cut, but I imagine this could have been done as well.

I like the way it feels, a bit notchy, but I like it.

The shifter is in 2 peices (for both series 4 and 5 FC's)... there is a rubber isolator between the 2 parts... the easiest way to get the 2 apart is to take a propane torch... use the torch to heat out the outter part (threaded peice).. just continue to heat it .. the rubber isolater will get softer and eventually expand.. when it does this the 2 peices will seperate on their own.. you jsut have to keepthe torch on it for awhile....

Warning.. the rubber isolater will start to smell real bad.. like burning tires (well it basically is a tire material)... and when the 2 parts to seperate you will have a bit of a sticky mess on your hands.. so be prepared to get your hands dirty....But this method is definitly alot easier then trying to seperate the 2 parts by brute force..
