How bad am I getting "screwed" on this S5 GTU... (Price)

Ok, Im about 2 weeks away from buying a 89 GTU. I cant wait, but I want to know how badly Im getting screwed on this deal. I know Im being overcharged, and I really dont care at this point as I really want this car.

Ill post pics at the bottom.

1989 GTU
88 Short-Block (Block and Rotors), 89 Intake and accessories.
Bonez Hi-Flow Cat
Custom 2.5" Cat-Back
Magna-Flow Mufflers (The ones that resonate REALLY bad at 2500-3500 RPM)
Apexi S-AFC Limited Edition II (The one from japan, with the black screen) NOT TUNED, just installed.
TII 5-Spoke Rims
5-Spd
Interiro is a 7.5/10 - Exterior is about a 7, there is minor damage to the front wheel well.
Sony CD Player (Cant remember what kind, nothing too fancy.
Jenson 400W Amp, and some X-Plod speakers, no Subs.

He's asking 4500.
What's it worth? To me its worth 4500, but I would like to get him down a little bit.

If you need any more info, ask...

Thanks,

Jonathan.

Correct, I used to have a 91 N/A and those are the wheels (the best in my opinion). Well, I just picked up today a 90 GXL from GARFINKLE for $800 (some work required). It say offer him $3500.

You could get a nice T2 for that price, but the car does look really good from the pictures, although we can't see the passenger side.

Wow well you dident mention the milage and that will really tell you if its worth 4500 bucks. I bought my car for that amount with mods and i have a TII. I wouldent pay more than 2k for a nice running n/a. Just keep in mind you can get a TII with that kind of money if your patient enough.

Umm, 88 shortblock? Why did the owner cheap out? Did he find a good used s4 block and throw it in?

This i would be very concerned about.

He used a 88 block and rotors, and kept all the S5 intake stuff etc etc. Which is on the car now. I have ridden in the car, very strong motor, idles perfect.

i see you live in raleigh...if you step over to NC's armpit aka rocky mount, you can find some pretty cheap 7's over here...ppl that live or run dealerships in the raleigh cary durham area tend to overcharge.

It's a private seller.

I think the only reason he's charging so much, is he's paid for almost everything in the car now.. the S-AFC, the wheels, the radio, the amp, the speaker, the short throw shifter (forgot to mention that)....

Which I can understand

Im getting this car no matter what, was just wondering if I could bargain him down a bit. I dont mind paying 4500, its worth it to me, but cheaper is always better :-D

no way, no way in all hell would i pay that much for that car. Its not even as fast as stock with that S4 block in there (unless its Street ported to hell and back). Id look for a TII for around 2500 and spend your other happy dollars for reliability mods and fixer-uper mods. But, as they say, its your cash

So can I port a S4?

Thats something I was considering, but I wasnt sure if it was OK with the S4....

Since the motor has such low-mileage, I could go with a good port job, as I dont care to get 100,000 miles out of it right now. Im 17, and the motor has 45K on it... Its got a good life infront of it :-D

Any recommendations?

I havent found a good article or anything where I can learn bout porting...

All i know is street, peripheral and bridgeporting... as in the terms :-\ I know nothing about what they actually do... but I think the street port just makes the 5th and 6th ports larger??

Any good reading on the differences between the ports, their effects, costs, reliability decreases, things I need to upgrade as the ports get "biggerr"

Thanks,
Jonathan

........ Well...... if you port it, you're going to have to rebuild it. Its the sad truth. You can port any rotary engine, i dont see where the years made would matter (maybe i misunderstood your post, if so, my appologies).

Well the only way to get to the inside of the ports is to take the engine apart. And when you rip an engine apart you usually (if not always) break some coolant seals (at least). You could probably get away with re-using the apex seals, side seals, oil control rings (metal and rubbers) and such, but you will break the coolant control rings. The kit for that is only about 200 i *think*. Check Mazdatrix or talk to Kevin, he'll know what I'm talking about. Why are you wanting to go through all this trouble for only say 5-10 HP anyways (saying you'd do a street port)?

It has to be taken apart to be ported right? That means you have to replace the seals and gaskets right? THATS a rebuild.

good point.

Well, what are my other options for porting...

I dont need to worry about emmissions (I plan on going with true duals later on, losing the exaust I have now)
A family friend does inspections, and can pass me no prob... so all my emmissions will be gone. Im going to keep A/C just because it gets hot as hell here during the summer. I dont know about power steering, i havent really driven the car yet.

Like I said, im not trying to get 250K miles out of it, This will be a daily driver, but It dosent have to last for 5 years.... If it does, I can always get another engine or something :-P

What are my options with porting, as in HP increase, and reliability... you know what i mean. Im not trying to sound like ever other 17 year old trying to get mAd 1/4 TimEs y0! Id just like to make my N/A a little faster, any racing I do will be on a track, autoX etc. Im not into street racing, not worth the risks.

Well bud, take some notes from my sig, thats some decent moddage for an N/A. You could do the Throttle body mod, but im kinda regretting it because of the idle problem and cold idling is absent. But back to the car your thinking about buying, from the pictures it looks good, but DO NOT pay anything over 3200 for that car. I got a good 88GTU for 3800 with 60K on the clock and everything original, and i DEFINATLY feel ripped off. I later sold the car for about 2grand after all was said and done for. Another thing the car has a lower horsepower motor in it that it came from the factory, so anything you do to that car will be just that much more behind any other S5. Id say look around, i know you are anxious to get a new car, and an RX7 at that, and you have found one for sale that you can afford, its still not worth paying what he is asking. Hate to say it, but keep looking. Im sure you'll find something better that you will love.

I paid only 2k for my 90 T2 if thats any help in your decision. It looks like a nice car. But for the price and the history of that car...keep shopping.

buy a TII, if you spend that much on an N/A you'll be regretting it later.
I'd estimate that there are only a few people on these boards that are actually satisfied with the power their N/A has.

I'm sure nobody is 'satisfied' with the power of their car.
Everybody wants more power but how much do you need?

Run. Run now. Don't look back. That's just way too much to pay for that car.
